Grassy pitches

  • Dog-friendly grassy pitches just outside of the Shropshire Hills
  • A five-minute drive to the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre
  • A 10-minute walk to a village pub and shop; fridge and freezer on site
Nipping to the Shropshire Hills to go hiking in the hills and mountain biking through thick woodlands? Kevindale Campsite is peaceful site half a mile from the edge of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, making it a nifty base for such outdoorsy breaks. Train spotters, gather around too, as the site overlooks the Heart of Wales Line and folks staying here can spot trains trundling by. The large grassy pitches are three miles from Craven Arms, where the The Heart of Wales Line begins its journey to Llanelli and the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre (five minutes’ drive) has 30 acres of riverside meadows, a museum and an Iron Age hillfort. The market town also has Mickey Millers Family Playbarn for any families looking for quick and easy amusements. There are plenty of places for a frothy coffee, a takeaway, pub grub or snacks in Craven Arms, but if your stomach’s growling urgently, just take yourself off to the village shop and pub, which are 10 minutes’ walk away from the site in Aston on Clun. Any frozen or fresh goods can be stowed away in the fridge and freezer provided at Kevindale Campsite – just pick them back out when you’re ready to rustle up a barbecue or firepit. There’s a washing-up area for you to scrub everything up afterwards and men’s and women’s showers and toilets whenever you fancy freshening up yourself. You’ll also be able to take your dog off to Shropshire's woods, hills, forests and valleys while you’re here, as the site welcomes canine guests too.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Relaxed site with friendly owners. Great for the kids to have a run round. They loved the tree den. They also loved feeding the sheep - thank you Stacy! Nice location and lovely position for exploring the area.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Helpful text in advance of arrival to explain where to go - clean well stocked facilities, lots of hot water for shower and washing up - spacious level field to park up - lovely pub within walking distance and helpful owners providing info about the Craven Hills discovery centre, perfect for a dog walk and a spot of lunch before heading off.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Decent facilities that were easy to access. Pitches were well spaced and layout was good. Staff very friendly and was easy to check in.

Disliked: Ground is very hard. Suggest a decent air mattress if camping. Everything else was excellent.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: It's quiet and in a convenient location. There is a pub a short distance away. The owners were friendly. It is very cheap and good value for money.

Disliked: The above mentioned Pub (Kangaroo Inn) is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. The next nearest one (The Hundred House Inn) is possibly the least friendly 'local' I have ever been in, felt like I had just walked into a strangers house and sat down ! Facilities at the campsite are a little basic, but I stayed in what I think was an overflow field.

Liked: Sweet and simple little site with clean amenities and really pleasant staff/owners. Great field with space to play for the kids and a little adventure walk up to a bridge over a river. The site was perfect and we will definitely return.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: We loved the location, ideal for our Shropshire walking. Lovely pub with good food 5 mins walk - the Kangaroo. Shower block lovely and clean. Campfires off ground allowed - bring your own wood, though we did see a couple of small fire pits you could probably use if don't have your own. Lovely views too from many pitches.

Disliked: More rain than forecast!

From the manager: Hi Ruth, thanks for your review. We are saddened to read your comments. We wish you would have felt comfortable to discuss these issues with us during your visit and we would have been more than happy to address your concerns and rectify any issues where possible. If you ever stay and are not happy with your neighbours please come to us as we are more than happy to talk with other guests if it’s a problem. As a small campsite with just toilet/shower blocks, no we do not have electrical sockets in the bathrooms, however we do have a plug situated by the campers fridge freezer that you were more than welcome to use. The train is situated behind the campsite this is close but as Broome is a tiny village it does not pass through often. If you decide to stay in the future we are more than happy to give a demonstration on how to use the shower.

Local attractions

The first question on your mind might be: where to go walking first? And there sure is a lot of choice, with all the trails around the Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd (25 minutes' drive), including a stream for cooling off and wild ponies wandering around. Mortimer Forest (20 minutes) has a thousand hectares worth of wildlife, including birds of prey and warblers, and Bucknell Wood (20 minutes) has plenty more, such as grass snakes and slow worms. As for those who’d like to take in the scenery with the wind rushing through their hair and two wheels beneath their feet, Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd and Hopton Woods (10 minutes) both have mountain biking tracks. Mighty fortresses may also play a part in your itinerary, given that the Hopton Castle (10 minutes) ruins, Clun Castle (15 minutes) and Ludlow Castle (20 minutes) are all so close by. While you’re in Ludlow (20 minutes), scout out if any food festivals or markets are on the schedule.
