  • Family-run meadow site on a working organic farm
  • A 10-minute drive to Rutland Water nature reserve and activity centre
  • Farm shop on site with organic meat; 5 mins' drive from pub and shop
Fan of watery views? Perhaps boat trips or riverside bike rides? Take a trip to Cuckoo Farm Campsite, where the Chater river flows alongside the fields… and where there's easy access to even more aquatic activities on and around Rutland Water, a 10-minute drive from the site. Roland and Rebecca, the owners of this little gem in Rutland, run an organic farm next door with pigs, turkeys, chickens, a small pack of fallow deer and a herd of Valais black-and-white sheep: visitors are invited to book tours and walks on the farm to book the greet the animals and scoop up fresh eggs. Farm products, including organic pork and lamb, can be purchased at the site store – and since barbecues and campfires are allowed, it surely follows that alfresco meals will be on the cards. This is a vast place with a whole heap of space where you can chill out and where the kids can run around. The facilities are kept simple and clean: hot showers and toilets are on hand, as is a washing-up place for pots and pans. A short stroll gets you to the banks of the Chater, where you can fish or paddle; also within walking distance is the village of Ketton, where there’s a food pub and a shop (or drive there in five minutes). Because of its proximity to Rutland Water Nature Reserve, the sky above Cuckoo Farm is often full of buzzards, kites, falcons (and of course cuckoos), so bring your binoculars along.

Liked: Very clean showers and toilets.

Disliked: Taps don't allow water to run unless you continuously press them so very difficult to wash your face or hands at the sinks.

Liked: Great site, lots of open space , near a stream. Shop well stocked

Disliked: Manger very rude, asked to make a payment due to plugging my electric car in. Nothing in the site terms to suggest I was doing anything wrong. Not enough facilities, toilets / showers, no motorhome service point

From the manager: Thanks for leaving the review and I’m sorry you found me rude as I really didn’t think I was being rude. I was simply explaining to you that the hook ups are for the normal camping use not for charging electric vehicles the reason being that the cost to us in electricity to charge a car like yours could nearly exceed your pitch fee. In the past our guest have always asked if they could charge their car and always offered to pay an amount equal to the cost of the electricity they use these payment and as was your payment was collected on behalf of a local charity we are currently collecting for the Rutland House Community Trust. We will now be updating our T&Cs to include a policy on electric vehicle charging to ensure we are not taken advantage of in the future. Having researched it prior to the development of our campsite 5 years ago I believe we have much higher-than-average toilet and shower ratio to guest than average and to what is recommend by all the camping clubs and associations, however in view of your comments in this area we will monitor the use of the facilities a peak times to see if this needs adjusting. I’m a little confused as to how the lack of motorhome service point effected your stay as you weren’t staying in a motorhome but where in fact staying in a tent.

Liked: Brilliant location with Red kites soaring overhead. Did hear a Cuckoo's call from the nearby hedgerow. Loved being able to have camp fire pits. Space for multiple units to camp together, so worked well for our family reunion.

Disliked: No Elsan disposal available. Some pitches were a tad sloped, but wedges worked well.

Liked: Friendly campsite owners . Well filled shop. Shower and toilet facilities were clean and modern.

From the manager: Thank you for your review and I'm really pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. I have tried contacting you via email and phone as I was hoping you could help us as we have searched the entire site and can find no indication that some has emptied their toilet on site as we wanted to make sure that it was properly cleaned up. We made a conscious decision not to have chemical toilet disposal point on our site when we developed it as we are an organic farm and didn’t feel it was appropriate, especially considering the main chemical used is formaldehyde, which is an extremely strong biocide, however following feedback from you and other guest we are currently looking into the feasibility of installing one.

Highly recommended with great clean facilities on a beautiful site.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: This was our 2nd stay and once again it didn’t disappoint. This place is beautiful and relaxing, with a stream running along the bottom of the field with rope swing's and a shallow area for the kids, adults and the dog to paddle around. Even when the place is fully booked it never seems to busy with plenty of green space to play, walk and socialise. The farm shop is well stocked with all your basics, incase you’ve forgotten something. It sells a selection of beers and wines and also has an on site butchery with fresh seasonal meats (sausages burgers etc. We had some venison burgers this time around and they were excellent. There is a frozen meat section also with a choice of roasting joints and venison steaks which we also took home with us.The shop also providesa good selection of coffees, hot chocolates etc. The site facilities are excellent also and very well maintained by Andy and Karen who live on site and are lovely and friendly. They are in charge of the day to day running of the site and are very accommodating with nothing being too much trouble. There is a large games tent with table football (free) and a table tennis table (balls are £1) and can be purchased at the shop. This is a working farm and the site has deer, goats and sheep literally in the field next to the pitches so kids can interact and watch them being fed by Roland (the owner) who is also very friendly. All in all I can’t recommend this place enough it has everything you’d want for a quiet relaxing holiday in beautiful surroundings. We will definitely be back soon.

Local attractions

Osprey, teal, crested grebe… alongside the rich variety of feathered life in Rutland Water Nature Reserve, 10 minutes' drive away, there's trout fishing to be had, plus windsurfing, sailing, boat cruises on the Rutland Belle and miles of paths for hikers and bikers to explore. Even fans of invertebrates and reptiles are included, with 75 species of crawling, scuttling and slithering things at Bugtopia, accompanied by meerkats and racoon dogs. Castle fans and history buffs will be kept busy, beetling round the solid brickwork of 12th-century Oakham Castle (15 minutes' drive), the palatial Tudor pile of Burghley House (20 minutes) and the dungeons of Newark Castle (50 minutes). Newark’s National Civil War Centre and Air Museum make the town top of the list for time travellers. For a different sort of journey, drive 15 minutes to Wansford for a puff on the steam-powered Nene Valley Railway, or explore the universe at the National Space Centre in Leicester (50 minutes). A punt down the river in Cambridge, an hour away, makes a pretty fine way to see the city and its oldest colleges, while the various museums offer everything from polar exploration to Persian carpets to particle accelerators.
