  • Peaceful glamping on a working farm in the Chiltern Hills
  • A 15-minute walk from the Thames; 10 minutes’ drive to pubs and cafes
  • Play area and communal firepit with barbecues, plus plenty of wildlife
Part of a working farm in Oxfordshire, peaceful Rolling Fields Glamping is a family-friendly site run by sisters Monica and Fiona. This is a rather lovely spot for a break – it's 15-minute walk from the River Thames and the village of Moulsford, and it's within the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, known for its trails through chalky hills and woodland. After parking your car, help yourself to a wheelbarrow to transport your gear to your accommodation. The kids will probably be eager to blow off some steam after the drive here, so let them loose in the playground (the site is contained, so they can run free). Then, with a piece of straw in your mouth (feeling rural yet?), unpack as sheep and lambs graze in the fields around you. It’s also worth keeping your eyes peeled for wildlife: that rustling sound in the hedges might be a roe deer or a curious hare. And at night, tucked under your warm duvet or hugging a hot-water bottle, you might fall asleep to the sound of owls hooting in the trees. All units here have their own outdoor seating area with a brazier for keeping warm on outdoor evenings, while a communal firepit with three gas barbecues encourages guests to mingle over some grilled goodies. If you prefer to let someone else take care of the cooking, there are pubs and cafés within a 10-minute drive, in the villages of Cholsey, Wallingford and Goring. Facilities on site include a drinking water tap, recycling facilities, a toilet block, showers, and a washing-up area with hot water and detergent.

Rigel bell tent (four person)

Liked: Really nice campsite with great views and only 6 pitches so overall very quiet and lots of space for games. Electricity in the tent was useful, as well as a small fridge, outside seating and a firepit. BBQs and picnic benches also a nice touch.

Disliked: Sadly the beds let the site down. They felt like thin foam mattresses and on some you could feel the slats when you lay on them. For this price I'd at least expect a spring mattress. I've stayed in cheaper glamping spots with better beds - albeit without electrics, fridge or BBQs.

Shepherd's hut (Private restroom amenities, two person)

Liked: Nice views, great to have power and amenities in the hut (fridge, towels, cozy bed, lights etc), nice to have our own shower room. Kids play area. Lovely 10 min stroll to a gorgeous pub on the river (Beetle and Wedge).

Disliked: Hadn’t realised the shower room was in a block a walk from the hut instead of right next to. Hut was very small, but was cozy. Would have been nice to have a host on site in case we needed anything.

Capella bell tent (Private restroom amenities, five person)

Liked: Quiet site with lovely spacious tent and excellent facilities. Everything was spotlessly clean and the tent included all the cooking equipment we needed. A good location for visiting Henley and enjoying delicious meals at The Beetle and Wedge in Moulsford. The private bathroom made for a civilised stay

Shepherd's hut (Private restroom amenities, two person)

Liked: The relaxed atmosphere, the views day and night. The facilities though cramped, were beautifully laid out. The facility of having ones own shower/toilet is something we have not seen before. Provision of barrows for luggage and the availability of wood for the burners was something we both liked.

Capella bell tent (Private restroom amenities, five person)

Liked: My friend and I holiday every year with our children and we rented the Capella Bell Tent for 2 nights. There are 5 of us and it was the perfect size for us and 3 teenage girls. Fiona the host was great, greeted us on arrival and checked in while we were there. The facilities were lovely and the tent was kitted out really well, we will definitely be back. We walked to Goring along the thames and found an amazing cafe called Pierreponts, the food was great! Had a drink in the Beetle and Wedge on the way back. We also went to Wallingford and hired a boat for an hour from the Boathouse pub and sailed down the river!

Local attractions

Make friends with meerkats, lemurs and otters (plus the odd reptile) at Beale Wildlife Park (10 minutes’ drive), where kids can also jump on bouncy pillows, navigate rope structures and have a go at a zipwire. On your way there, you might want to stop at Basildon Park, an elegant 18th-century mansion known for colourful spring and summer wildflowers in its vast parkland. If your tastes run to aquatic activities, Oxford Wet n Wild (20 minutes) has an inflatable adventure course, plus paddleboards and kayaks for hire. And if you need to realign your chakras (not to mention work your core till it’s sore), you can try SUP yoga. Meanwhile the Oxford Wakeboard and Ski Club (20 minutes) has both open-water swimming and more high-energy pursuits like wakeboarding. Spend a day in the university city of Oxford (35 minutes), checking out its fine medieval architecture and the art and antiquities collections at the Ashmolean Museum. The Oxford Botanic Garden and Harcourt Arboretum (on the outskirts of the city) should appeal to green-fingered visitors.
