  • Peaceful 12-acre pop-up site with sweeping views of the Chiltern Hills
  • Henley-on-Thames 10 minutes' drive; 40 minutes to Windsor Castle
  • Footpaths next to the site; walk to Stonor Park or a vineyard
Take some chillout time in the Chiltern Hills with a stay at Fawley Fields Camping – this laidback pop-up site is in a quiet rural Oxfordshire spot 10 minutes’ drive from Henley-on-Thames, with sweeping views across the surrounding green slopes. It's also very much family-friendly: the grass pitches are part of a 12-acre site set around a central grove of trees where there are hammocks, firepits and outdoor games that guests can use to relax, socialise and keep warm. The site also schedules activities such as outdoor cinema nights. Keeping to the traditional spirit of camping, there’s no wifi or electricity here but guests do have access to amenities including drinking water, a washing-up area, toilets and showers. You’re also welcome to bring along a barbecue for a traditional alfresco meal; barbecues must be raised off the ground, and disposal barbecues are not welcome. As you might expect from a location in the Chiltern Hills National Landscape, there are plentiful options for walks in the vicinity. You’ll have the choice of wandering straight out onto footpaths just next to the site, seeking out trails from nearby towns and villages or heading down to the Thames Path for a riverside ramble. Whichever you choose, it’s a fine idea to be back on site before dusk, because the sunset is often rather stunning from this scenic spot. As cars can't be driven onto the site, the team has a trolley that guests can borrow to transport their things from the car park to the pitch.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: The location, the views, the simplicity and for the most part the peace.

Disliked: The large family who turned up late (well after dark, around 9.30 despite the 7pm arrival cut off) and proceeded to floodlight the allocated campervan area with their vehicle headlights and a freestanding spotlight whilst they longly and loudly pitched their enormous tent right next to my van. I was forced to move for safety and sanity! I know you can’t odds people but really the site manager shouldn’t have allowed it.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Had a great stay here with my family. The owners are very welcoming and made the stay perfect. The views over the valley were better than the pictures!! The showers were also very cool. Rustic and hand made, a very nice added touch.

We will be back!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Fawley fields is a beautiful place to be. It is a wide open field with lovely views down over the valley to the west so you can sit and watch the sunset. There is a little stand of trees in the centre in which they have placed hammocks, bunting, games, fire pits and pillows. Our children loved exploring this and they loved that we let them roam free because cars were only allowed into the parking area. The basic pop up facilities were always clean with soft loo roll and soap in the loos and the shower had hot water. The campsite only had a handful of families even on a summer holiday weekend. It felt like what camping is supposed to be.
