  • Well-kept adults-only site 10 minutes’ drive from Banbury, Oxfordshire
  • Silverstone Circuit 20 minutes’ drive; Blenheim Palace 40 minutes
  • Dog-friendly pitches with pubs and cafés 20 minutes’ walk away
If you’re looking for a peaceful and adults-only Oxfordshire escape, the tourer site at Highlands (10 minutes’ drive from Banbury) fits the bill very well. It’s easy to get to, being five minutes’ drive from junction 11 on the M40 and just off the A361, and has a handful of pitches with electric hook-ups in a well-maintained field sheltered by mature trees. Any doggy companions are welcome on site, and you can all set out for long meanders along the pretty Oxford Canal (20 minutes’ walk). If you’d like to be a bit more active, try a round of golf, playing tennis or kayaking on the River Cherwell (all within five minutes’ drive). For a change of scenery, there are several pubs and cafés in riverside Cropredy, a pretty village with thatched cottages and site of a well-known music festival held every August. It's a 20-minute walk from the site to Cropredy, although the lanes are narrow and windy in places, so you might prefer to drive or cycle there. Spotless facilities on site include toilets and a shower, a washing-up area, fresh water supply and Elsan point. If you feel the need for a little pampering, you can also book a private session in the hot tub.

Liked: Easy to find, pitches very spacious.
Close to bus stop where we took the bus to Banbury and had a lovely walk by the Oxford canal.
20 min walk to Cropredy where we had a delicious meal in the Brasenose pub (which John the campsite owner recommended).
John was very helpful and friendly and was there to greet us and show us the site, he even asked if we needed anything from the shops.
Very tidy, well kept campsite.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike.

Liked: Friendly welcome from John who showed us around the site and facilities. The site is clean and well laid out.
Site is just off the main 'A' Road so very easy to find and navigate.
Plenty of walks in the area. Ask John for the 'circular walk' map. Lovely walk we did in 2 sessions.
20 min walk into Cropredy village that has 2 pubs and a cafe. Lovely village with thatched cottages.
Excellent bus service into Banbury from stop 5 mins from the site. £3 single adult fare. Takes about 15/20 mins.

Liked: Everything! John and Judy are the perfect hosts for a campsite. We were welcomed and given a tour of the facilities which were spotless. John went above and beyond to help us enjoy the weekend of MotoGP at Silverstone. We had forgotten our flagpoles, but John was quickly to the rescue! The access was very good, and Wi-Fi included in the very reasonable cost. The site itself is beautiful, and I could hear so many different birds singing. The site is close to M40 so easy to get to. All in all, we had a perfect weekend. We will be back next year (subject to Silverstone pricing!)

Local attractions

The only problem you’ll have is deciding what to do first. Warwick Castle (25 minutes’ drive) is a good place to start, with tours of its medieval banqueting hall and live jousting shows, although stately Blenheim Palace (40 minutes) holds its own with fabulous Vanbrugh-designed rooms to tour, an exhibition dedicated to Sir Winston Churchill and numerous walks in the formal gardens and parkland. For more history, head for Stratford-upon-Avon (also 40 minutes), where you can visit Shakespeare’s Birthplace, see the thatched half-timbered cottage where his wife Anne Hathaway lived, and catch his plays performed at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. If you fancy combining a sightseeing trip with a decent stroll and exercising your canine chums, National Trust - Stowe Gardens (half an hour) has several options for lakeside walks in 250 acres crammed with follies. Petrol-heads can catch the British Grand Prix (held in July) and book their own driving experiences at Silverstone Circuit. Alternatively, check out all the classic cars at the British Motor Museum (both 20 minutes), where star exhibits include Del Boy’s three-wheeler from “Only Fools and Horses” and Jackie Stewart’s F1 car.
