  • Laidback farm glamping on the edge of the Cotswolds
  • Five minutes' drive from Bampton; Oxford 25 minutes
  • Tastefully furnished bell tents with outdoor cooking area and firepit
What does the discerning traveller look for in a glamping site? While there are no set rules, it's fair to say that an attractive farm location with rural scenery and accommodation with views overlooking water are all highly prized. All of these attributes can be found in one place at Camping Westmoor Farm, a peaceful Oxfordshire site close to the edge of the Cotswolds. Camping Westmoor Farm's modern and spacious bell tents are hidden away between a pool, woodlands and farmland roughly a mile outside of the village of Bampton, where there's a pub, coffee shop, small supermarket and post office. The tents are fully furnished, meaning this attractive setting is matched by equally enticing interiors. In terms of practicalities, guests here get access to well-maintained eco-friendly toilets and showers, plus a handy camping kit containing cooking equipment (but please remember to bring your own bedding). Kids, meanwhile, have an outdoor play area and go-karts for burning off excess energy. The site is about a mile north of the River Thames, which can be crossed by road at Tadpole Bridge, home to a very popular pub. Wandering westwards along the river, you'll soon reach Chimney Meadows National Nature Reserve, while the pretty old village of Radcot is a similar distance away to the east.

Bell tent

Liked: The park was great, children enjoyed it. We got upgraded to the cabin which was beautiful. The area was incredible, beautiful nature. Very quiet and lots of space to explore.

Disliked: The only thing would be the toilets, I understand why they are nature toilets, but it was a little too scary for me.

Bell tent

Liked: The bell tents and fire pit, plus the fridge freezer with ice blocks.

Disliked: We are very seasoned campers and were excited to visit Westmore Farm. However I’m sorry to say we were very disappointed and would not recommend the site to anyone. We were greeted by a voice on an intercom at the locked gate, and never saw a single member of staff for three days. The compostable toilets are ramshackle to say the least (rain pouring through the ceiling, holes in the walls showing you the next door cubicle) The *ONE* shower was not used by any of us, the door didn’t lock and you could see straight into it from outside. The play equipment was unsafe, as is not anchored down to the ground. It has the potential to be really great but it’s not quite there yet.

Bell tent

Liked: The beds in the bell tents

Disliked: Playground equipment was very unsafe. Only one shower for the whole site that didn’t even work well. No lights in the toilets. Only one washing up sink but with no hot water. Cooking stove only has one side working and this was for 5 bell tents. No staff onsite all weekend, no reception area. Very disappointed.

Local attractions

TV buffs may recognise some of Bampton's streets (five minutes' drive), as this location was used to shoot village scenes in Downton Abbey – serious fans of the series could also drive south to Highclere Castle (45 minutes), whose imposing architecture and gorgeous gardens appeared in pretty much every episode. Similarly grand surrounds are also on display at Buscot Park (15 minutes) and Blenheim Palace (35 minutes). Heading west into the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (15 minutes) is another bright idea – you have the choice between traditional market towns like Stow-on-the-Wold (30 minutes), zoos like Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens (15 minutes) and Crocodiles of the World (20 minutes) or the fab foliage at The National Arboretum in Westonbirt (an hour). To the east, Oxford (25 minutes) has illustrious seats of learning – including Christ Church and Magdalen College, which are both particularly scenic – plus world-class museums and vantage points like Carfax Tower and St Mary's Church where you can admire the splendid cityscape below. There's also ample scope for punting yourself up and down the river or taking a gentle boat cruise on the Thames.
