  • Peaceful wooden cabin with views over Nottinghamshire countryside
  • A 35-minute drive to Clumber Park; 45 minutes to Chatsworth House
  • Ensuite shower, TV and well-equipped kitchen; walks direct from site
With stunning views of the Nottinghamshire hills, Peaceful Cabin Retreat is just that – a natty wooden cabin tucked away from the world on a 10-acre working smallholding. Your companions in the surrounding fields are likely to be horses, sheep and free-roaming hens – as well as birds of prey soaring in the thermals above you. Finished to a very high spec, the accommodation incorporates a spacious living area with cosy sofas and a TV for lazy days, a double bedroom with a comfy mattress (quality cotton bedding and towels provided), and a corner shower unit with water jets in the ensuite bathroom. Should you wish to go completely self-sufficient in the food department, stock up in Sutton-in-Ashfield (10 minutes’ drive) supermarkets – cooking in this well-equipped kitchen is a total cinch, thanks to a full-size fridge-freezer, counter-top mini oven, microwave and two-ring hob. (If cooking’s off the agenda, there are quite a few pubs within 10 minutes’ drive.) Moving outside, there’s sheltered decking overlooking those gorgeous rural views, a firepit to keep you all cosy on chilly evenings and private parking. Lots of walks and bike rides are in the area just around the cabin, including the circular Teversal Trail following a former railway line.

Local attractions

From your cosy cabin retreat, hike to Brierley Forest Park (35 minutes), a wildlife haven and sculpture park set in a former colliery, or take the longer yomp to Tudor-era Hardwick Hall (an hour and 15 minutes’ walk), a Tudor masterpiece open for tours of opulent rooms and 18th-century water gardens. To explore more of Nottinghamshire, get in the car and set off for Clumber Park, with bike trails leading past ornamental bridges, a lime tree avenue and the landmark Chapel of St Mary the Virgin. Cycle tracks and footpaths in Sherwood Forest (both 35 minutes) lead to the Major Oak, a giant of a tree believed to be around 1,000 years old. Slip over the county lines into Derbyshire to visit Chatsworth House (45 minutes) and tour the 105-acre garden and arboretum dotted with fountains and sculptures. Keen to get in some sporting activity? Explore the forest canopy by treetop rope course at Go Ape Sherwood (half an hour), or head to the National Water Sports Centre in Holme Pierrepont Country Park (an hour) to have a bash at paddleboarding or white-water rafting.
