  • Off-grid wild camping by fishing lakes in Nottinghamshire countryside
  • A 15-minute drive to Belvoir Castle, and 20 minutes to Newark-on-Trent
  • Woodland pitches and angling, close to shops, pubs and stately houses
Encompassing a 232-acre site in glorious Nottinghamshire countryside, Belvoir Waters is an eco-friendly, wild-camping spot with one golden rule: be as environmentally thoughtful as possible. You’re left to your own devices to find your perfect pitch among natural woodland, surrounded by three lakes covering 80 acres of water. This is a serene place where couples and families can wander around the lakes and stroll the woodland walks, listening out for some of the 180 bird species spotted in the area. Well-behaved dogs are welcome too – and keen anglers, line up here please, as you can fish on the lakes – and tuition is available for novices (at a fee). You’ll need to be self-sufficient and bring all your own camping gear, but you can park by your pitch, so there’s no lugging of equipment across fields for you. As the site is completely off grid, it’s best to add in a barbecue as well as bits and bobs for cooking when you’re packing. But don’t worry too much about the packing – anything you’ve forgotten you can pick up in Newark-on-Trent (20 minutes’ drive), which has plenty of supermarkets as well as fish and chip shops or Chinese takeaways. Newark Royal Market (Wednesday) has been held in the market square pretty much non-stop since the 12th century, and it’s a special treat to rummage around the stalls for fresh local produce.

Liked: We loved the open view of the lake. The birds, the walks, the Staunton Arms, Roger's welcome!

Disliked: We hadn't realised there was no fresh water pipe and would have brought more water with us had we known.

    Primitive forest floor tent campsite

Liked: We were welcomed by Roger at an agreed time and showed into the site. He was very polite, friendly with my young son and we enjoyed some chit chat before being shown the way to our area. The site is absolutely beautiful. Despite there being some small signs of activity (areas where campfires have previously been) the site was well maintained and there was no litter to be seen anywhere, or mess left behind by previous campers or anglers. We found a quieter spot to by the lake and were able to watch a variety of insects, fish, birds and small mammals in the area, including stoats and muntjacs, which was great for my young son who is a huge animal and nature lover. We paddled in the lake which has some shallower beach areas which was appreciated on the hot day. We were able to do this clear of anglers who we did not want to disturb. There was a portaloo site which was cleaner than many I’ve used in the past. There were very few sounds from outside of the campsite to ruin the immersion, though there is a road close to the camp we did not hear cars passing throughout the night or sounds from the nearby village despite it being a sunny Saturday evening. It did feel like we’d managed to escape to the wild for a while. We had a look around and there are some really beautiful pitches that some had been lucky enough to grab before we’d arrived. I’d love to return and try and camp on some of these, especially some which almost seemed to have their own private beaches! All in all the site is a real hidden gem and we’d be happy to return and enjoy it at different times of the year.

Disliked: The road into the woodlands isn’t very friendly for small vehicles, car got beaten up a bit driving along the track into the woods. We were welcome to decide on our own pitch, but at 11am the only spots left were in pretty close proximity of the track (being used all day by cars), a footpath alongside the River Devon which was being used by walkers, or other campers who had already pitched up. The woodland area seemed pretty crowded and would choose a lakeside pitch next time which seemed much quieter and more spaced out. I understood this was the last weekend of the summer holidays so gave the benefit of the doubt for it being busy. We pitched next to one group who were particularly inconsiderate, with a dog barking throughout the day and running at people/cars, playing music into the late evening, bright lights illuminating the woods all night, chopping wood throughout the night (and also first thing in the morning - waking us up) and driving along the woodland track after 10pm, which was against the site policies. This is not the fault of the site, however my only criticism here is that there was no one ensuring policies were adhered to. We were going to hang around for a campfire breakfast but were fed up by 8am so just packed up quickly and headed out.

Lakeside primitive grass and earth campsite

Liked: This really is going back to nature! There are no facilities other than a portaloo which can be quite a distance away depending on your pitch but it was spotless so go prepared! The pitches are huge and not too close to a neighbour, each with their own natural fire pit. It was clean and tidy and we loved the peace and quiet and the stunning views across the water. This really is a ‘get away from it all’ trip! There are no nearby shops so take what you need but Newark is a short car journey away for anything you need. We took our 3 dogs and they enjoyed the endless space and having a swim. Alan who met us to show us to our pitch was lovely and answered any questions we had. We will 100% be back.

Liked: We love this campsite been a few times now. There is plenty of space, no one nearby, which we love, take the paddle board out on the water. Camp fires aloud. There is 1 portable toilet around the water never used as we take all our own facilities.

Disliked: A water tap and waste disposal would be a bonus but would not put me off going.

    Local attractions

Belvoir Castle (15 minutes’ drive) may well be your first stop. Built in the early 19th century, it has adventure playgrounds and woodland paths for kids and dogs to run around in, as well as guided tours of the 'big house'. When you’ve had your fill of history, you can replenish energy levels at the restaurants, ice-cream parlours and unusual shops at The Engine Yard retail village. Lovers of old houses might also like to glance over Elizabethan-era Wollaton Hall (40 minutes) and its manicured parkland – they do a spooky ghost tour (one way to make the kids behave) and lots of Tudor-themed events during summer. If you’d prefer to get more active on your holiday, there are plenty of cycling and walking trails – for all levels – all around the campsite. There’s also a riding school (five minutes), a couple of golf courses and a public swimming pool (all 20 minutes).
