  • Angling site with six lakes and the River Idle alongside
  • Regular match venue for coarse fishing, 30 minutes from Sherwood
  • Tackle shop, central amenities and café and licensed restaurant
Spectacular fishing with mighty scenic views... cast off at Nottinghamshire's Hallcroft Fishery and Holiday Park for angling in seven waters on a spacious and well-equipped park. Six lakes are at your fishing disposal here, along with yet more angling in the River Idle which runs alongside the site. You can land bream, eels, roach, tench, perch and varying types of carp at these, including at the huge Moat lake which is a regular venue for matches around its 190 pegs; if you fancy your hand at procuring pike, the river's the place to be. And if you need tackle, kit, bait or any angling advice, a shop for the same is right on site. Hallcroft is two and a half miles from East Retford, about 40 minutes' drive from Newark and half an hour from Sherwood Forest. You can stay solely on site should you so wish: the Kingfisher café and restaurant dishes up full English breakfasts, tea, coffee and toast to sort sustenance before a day's fishing; hot snacks are available some lunchtimes, and evening meals are on offer for after your angling. The restaurant is licensed, to serve boozy beverages during standard pub hours, and a pool table and darts board are to hand too. There are showers and toilets in the centre of the site, part of a good range of amenities including recycling, chemical disposal, a washing-up area and gas cylinder sales.

Liked: Showers and toilet block clean and noticeable that someone was around looking after the place.

Disliked: Evening noise from other campers, pitches felt a bit close. No Wi-Fi

From the manager: Thanks for the review, I'm sorry that you experienced noise from other campers and will mention this to others who are checking in moving forward. I'm not sure how you wasn't happy with the WIFI as we don't advertise it, and all pitches are 6 meters apart which is a minimum space required. Many thanks Mark James

Liked: Not much

Disliked: Lack off staff at reception, and guidance at pitch location.Lack of basic signage to plots allocated.Toilets at entrance dirty and touring shower block coat hooks broken .

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for the review, however reception staff does leave at 5pm, but they do make sure that customers who are arriving after 5pm are left with their check in paperwork in the Perspex box on the reception door. The toilets are the entrance are for fishermen and not for the holiday makers. The toilet block on the camping area is for the holiday makers and i can ensure there cleaned twice a day. I can agree that the hooks on the toilet doors are broken and are being replaced ASAP. Many Thanks.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Good place for fishing, nice town close by, good cycling paths along the river and canal. Toilets and showers were clean only a few on site, but we were there at a quiet time of year. Staff were helpful. Would go back again.

Disliked: No Wi-Fi and difficult to tell what time the bar was open

From the manager: Thanks for the review, we don't advertise WIFI so I'm not sure how you could rate us on it and think it may be a bit unfair. Many Thanks Hallcroft

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Good space to walk the dog

Disliked: Very rude receptionist who doesn’t answer phone or respond to any emails. Disgusting toilets that never had toilet roll ended up buying our own and having to use that. Was absolutely filthy in the end we stopped using the showers from all the dirt, clumps of hair and smell. We understand we stayed on bank holiday and we were expecting it to be busy but when there was the amount of people there they should be cleaned at least more than once a day. Very noisy until 2am with music and lots of shouting and drunk people tripping over our tent. We also came across teenagers and adults smoking weed blatantly in front of everyone which isn’t what we want when we have a young child running about. The site is very run down with what looked like a scrap yard in the middle of one of the fishing islands. The bins were also over flowing most of the time

Local attractions

After your angling, take the kids to Sundown Adventureland (20 minutes' drive), a theme and play park for under-10s with rides and attractions of all sorts including an intriguingly-named ostrich safari ride. (You may or may not opt to let the kids know a pet shop is at the park too...) For a calmer time, the National Trust and Grade I-listed Clumber Park is 25 minutes from Hallcroft, for peaceful potters around its 3,800 acres. It's the former home of the Duke of Newcastle, so ponder on how the other half live during your scenic strolls, or hire a bike to pedal around the woodland and lake. National Cycle Route 6 connects Clumber Park with fab Sherwood Forest, along a path of almost seven miles. If you'd prefer to stay closer to home, Hallcroft is next to the biking and hiking of the Idle Valley Nature Reserve, an excellent birdwatching spot.
