  • Off-grid site on a working farm nine miles from Milton Keynes
  • A 15-minute drive from Willen Lake, Milton Keynes and Stowe
  • Farm shop on site selling honey, frozen meat and freshly-laid eggs
Seeking a small, quiet spot for your next getaway? Go on and base yourself at Cranley Barn Campsite, an off-grid site on a working farm nine miles from Milton Keynes. With a farm shop on site selling freshly-laid eggs, honey from the farm and frozen homegrown meat, there’s little doubt that your breakfasts and dins will be tasty (cooked over a barbecue or firepit, as both are permitted here). Watersports on your list of wants? Just head to Willen Lake, 15 minutes’ drive away from the site. There are lots of historical sites and National Trust sites within a short drive of the site (including Stowe, 15 minutes’ drive away). It’s a handy location, as the site’s centrally located close to the Buckingham and Northamptonshire border. This Greener Camping Club certified site may be small, but it isn’t short on facilities. There are two composting toilets, two hot LPG showers, a washing-up area with hot water, recycling points and drinking water. There’s also a communal area, where guests can order cake and coffee from the shop. If you’re after any pubs, there are a couple within half an hour to 50 minutes’ walk of the site. Handily for families, there’s also a pick-your-own fruit farm with sunflowers and a maize maze half an hour’s walk away and another similar place (along with a farm park, Buckingham and Stony Stratford) 10 minutes’ drive away.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite (secluded, large, eight person)

Liked: Absolutely lovely place! Cannot recommend this place enough, we will definitely be back. The facilities were really clean and we loved the peace and quiet. Having an autistic child Holidays are normally a nightmare for us but we decided to give it a go and this site could not have been a better place. The pitches are beautiful spread out and you really feel like you’re on your own. No cars allowed by the pitch was a massive bonus for us as we could actually relax and let our son roam when he needed to. He spent hours just bare foot walking through the long grass searching for grass hoppers.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite (six person)

Liked: Brilliant campsite - very peaceful, with excellent facilities. The kids loved playing and exploring in the field, as well as the regular visits from Parsnip and Sprout, the farm dogs. The badger sighting was an added bonus.

Disliked: Farm shop . The honey £5.50 very reasonable but the milk at £2.40 a pint was to say the least expensive I pay £1.50 a litre from the farm shop near me (chathems organic milk Shropshire)
