  • Lakeside site in a secluded location near Tattershall Thorpe
  • A 25-minute drive from Boston; 40 minutes from Skegness
  • Pet-friendly back to basics site; near fishing lakes and a golf course
How about settling down for a stint by a Lincolnshire lake? If seclusion and natural vistas are your thing, head to Woodhall Spa Wild Camping near Tattershall Thorpe, where several bodies of water to admire plus fab green surrounds equals a top spot for peaceful family hols. This back to basics site is a hub for water and land-based wildlife – as well as the lakes, the area is covered in thick foliage including ancient and planted woodland. Once you've picked a suitable clearing among the trees and settled down in your new digs, you may want to head out in search of woodland beasties or take a stroll along the lake (with the dog, if you've brought one along to this pet-friendly site). You can also while the evening away grilling grub over a barbecue (but please make sure the hot stuff is raised safely off the ground). Here you'll most definitely feel deep in the countryside, but handily this secluded site is a few minutes' drive from the multiple amenities of Coningsby (five minutes' drive), where there are several pubs, takeaway joints and food shops. There's a big RAF base here, too, so turn your gaze skywards while visiting for a chance to spot various planes zooming overhead.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: What a great simple, peaceful place. If you like wild camping, this is the place for you. Just a few fields, surrounded by trees and fishing lakes. Perfect relaxing weekend. Absolutely nothing there just an abundance of peace and quiet. Bliss!

Disliked: Toilet could possibly do with a little TLC. We did take our own, just in case and glad we did.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Had a great couple of nights at Woodhall Spa Wild Camping. We got shown around the camping areas of the location and settled near a pond. Everything is lovely and peaceful, can certainly recommend if you want silence and a break away from the day to day. Toilet facilities not the best or clean, but the location and quietness itself outweighs that for me. A nice place to test whether you would want to camp again as it is about 10 mins away from Woodhall via car.

Disliked: That I didn't bring some fly repellent!

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Acres of land to explore, stunning lakeside scenery and a true feeling of escape! Steve is a friendly and accommodating host, checking in with me (solo female) but not intrusive. Beautifully clean site, plenty of space and options for pitching and the only wild camping I've found in Lincolnshire. Will be returning soon!

Disliked: Having to be at work Monday morning and not staying another night!

Local attractions

It goes without saying that there'll be plenty of scope for relaxing if you plump for this peaceful part of the world. If golf is high up on your R+R agenda, drive five minutes' up the road to some of the lushest links around at RAF Coningsby Golf Club. Though owned by the military, this friendly club welcomes all players, whether you're new to the game or putt with military precision. Other outdoor pursuits like fishing at Bain Valley Fisheries (five minutes' drive) also come highly recommended. Fancy delving into the Lincolnshire of yesteryear? Tattershall Castle (five minutes) is a proper medieval fortress, complete with moat and towers. Boston (25 minutes) is another mightily historic spot – check out gorgeous old buildings like St. Botolph's Church and Maud Foster Mill or opt for the funky artefacts on show at the town's Bubblecar Museum. Bound for the beach? Skegness (40 minutes) is the nearest big resort, while wilder coastal spots like Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve (45 minutes) are also within easy reach. Head slightly further afield to Donna Nook (about an hour) if you're keen to spot some of the grey seals that live in these waters.
