  • Peaceful 18-acre rural site five minutes' drive from Haxey
  • Yorkshire Wildlife Park and Scunthorpe within a half-hour drive
  • Dog training sessions on site
Lupine Woods Camping is a peaceful rural site spread over 18 acres of lovely north Lincolnshire countryside about five minutes’ drive from the village of Haxey. The site is tucked away at the end of a two-mile country track and well away from any main roads so it’s a fine spot for those seeking a bit of space and seclusion. It’s right next door to the Haxey Turbary Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust nature reserve, and has its own woodland walk so it’s also a splendid pick for photography and wildlife spotting. If you think all this sounds like the sort of thing your dog might enjoy very much, you’d probably be right – and indeed well-behaved dogs are most welcome here, with an exercise paddock to race about in and lots of excellent walks to take in nearby. On top of that, the site often runs courses in such skills as agility, scent work and obedience – have a chat with the folk here to see what might be running during your stay. Not got a canine chum to bring along? Perhaps you’d like to take the chance to spend some quiet time hanging out around your pitch – each one is pleasingly spacious, with easy ins and outs on flat, well-drained surfaces. There are plenty of water points scattered around the place, and guests have access to showers and toilets close to the pitches.

Powered grass travel trailer campsite

Liked We stayed at Lupine Woods Campsite from 3rd–7th August. This is a quiet, basic site with NO Internet, perfect for those wanting to relax in a natural setting away from crowds.
If you want entertainment, play areas, or fast food, this is not the place for you. Finding it was easy. In Haxey, turn onto Turbary Road and follow it past where the tarmac ends; a short, smooth gravel road leads to the car park. There is no reception, shop, or café, though a vending machine offers canned drinks for £1. The large building on-site is the IABTC Canine Activities Centre, which runs various dog training workshops. On arrival, look for the lady in the caravan under the trees. She will contact the helpful owner, Dan, who arrives within minutes to finalise bookings. It was quiet when we arrived, so Dan kindly let us choose our pitch. Since we have a dog, we picked a shady spot with electric hook-up (EHU). Dan asked to keep dogs on leads but pointed out a secure, fenced dog field where they can run free (it was a bit overgrown due to a mower malfunction during our stay). He also highlighted a 10-minute woodland walk on-site and longer walks in the adjacent Haxey Turbary nature reserve. The site is ideal for watching wildlife, including rabbits, butterflies, and even a Barn Owl. Because of the rabbits, the ground is slightly uneven with holes, so check the terrain before pitching. The soil is soft, black sand, meaning tent pegs go in easily but require extra securing. Due to hot weather, fires and BBQs were rightly banned. Facilities are basic but functional. The toilet and shower block is a portacabin (ladies at one end, gents at the other) with two toilets and a large shower. It looks a bit jaded and could use a lick of paint, but it was clean with plenty of hot water. Apparently, the local council refused planning permission for a permanent block, hence the current setup. The dishwashing station is also basic but adequate, and there are plenty of water points. During our stay, there were only a few tents, caravans, and motorhomes, making for a peaceful atmosphere. Dog training classes ran on Tuesday and Wednesday, which gave our dog plenty of entertainment. We had a very relaxing five days, slept incredibly well, and found Dan to be an excellent, attentive host. We highly recommend Lupine Woods for a quiet nature break and will definitely return.

Disliked Nothing to dislike.
We are happy that it has no Internet connection, not an issue for us but am mentioning it again - for anyone who CAN'T live without Internet - this is NOT the site for you!.

Liked Big spacious pitches.
Access to the woods for walking the dog.
Close proximity to the toilets, showers, water point, pot wash, etc.
The £1 vending machine for ice cold drinks.

Disliked When we first arrived, we pitched our tent at an electrical hook up point, to find that it had been disconnected along the line. After a quick and cheerful telephone call, this was very quickly remedied by Dan, and we were able to use our luxuries soon enough.
Very sandy ground in places.

Liked Loved how rural it is
And how quiet
And would definitely come again
So much wildlife to enjoy

Disliked The rabbit holes were off the scale
Even in the tent we were falling into them
And the toilets were quite a long walk from the tent pitches

Local attractions

A couple of worthwhile attractions are within a 10-minute drive of this park, including the petting zoo and kids’ play area at Shepherds Place Farm. Travel the same distance for Epworth, the birthplace of John and Charles Wesley (10 minutes) too, or make tracks a tad further for transportation-related high jinks at The Trolley Bus Museum (20 minutes). Another ace selection of displays to add to the itinerary are at the aviation-themed Vulcan Experience (20 minutes), an open-air space housing two of the Cold War's most famed aircraft: the Avro Vulcan B2 and the McDonnell Douglas Phantom II. Prefer animals to aircraft? Yomp to Yorkshire Wildlife Park (25 minutes) and Messingham Zoo or meet the rescued creatures at Bransby Horses centre (40 minutes) instead. Top off your trip by traipsing around Brodsworth Hall and Gardens (40 minutes), one of England’s most intact Victorian country homes.
