  • Peaceful 18-acre rural site five minutes' drive from Haxey
  • Yorkshire Wildlife Park and Scunthorpe within a half-hour drive
  • Dog training sessions on site
Lupine Woods Camping is a peaceful rural site spread over 18 acres of lovely north Lincolnshire countryside about five minutes’ drive from the village of Haxey. The site is tucked away at the end of a two-mile country track and well away from any main roads so it’s a fine spot for those seeking a bit of space and seclusion. It’s right next door to the Haxey Turbary Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust nature reserve, and has its own woodland walk so it’s also a splendid pick for photography and wildlife spotting. If you think all this sounds like the sort of thing your dog might enjoy very much, you’d probably be right – and indeed well-behaved dogs are most welcome here, with an exercise paddock to race about in and lots of excellent walks to take in nearby. On top of that, the site often runs courses in such skills as agility, scent work and obedience – have a chat with the folk here to see what might be running during your stay. Not got a canine chum to bring along? Perhaps you’d like to take the chance to spend some quiet time hanging out around your pitch – each one is pleasingly spacious, with easy ins and outs on flat, well-drained surfaces. There are plenty of water points scattered around the place, and guests have access to showers and toilets close to the pitches.

Liked It was quiet and lots of space to walk dogs.

Disliked Road - hard going with a heavy van. Ground conditions - quite sandy/muddy.
Shower - head quite low and with a curtain, could be cold with door open.
Signs and fencing seemed a bit uncared for.

Liked It was quite remote and lots of space, good sized pitches. Would go back. Lots of us came as a group with 4 pitches and really enjoyed our weekend. Also the guy who runs it is so nice, really helpful and chatty.

Liked Absolutely amazing location, lovely welcome from Janet and later from Dan.
Able to free pitch as we were the only people there even though it's peak season.
Plenty of phone signal, so no issues with Wi-Fi.
Woodland walk for the dogs was wonderful.
Quiet, rural and peaceful site, the access road was not an issue at all, just have to take it steady.

Disliked Unfortunately the entire site suffers from an air of neglect and we ended up leaving after one night even though we paid for two. In fairness we did not contact Dan with our concerns, we read all the reviews and can see a common theme that has been happening for an extended period of time, so didn't feel that it would be beneficial.

In hindsight perhaps we should have checked the amenities between arriving and when Dan came to see us. Had we done that, we would have stayed but only paid for one night as we had driven for nearly 5 hours by then.

Perfectly happy with basic and very happy with rural, however the amenities were dirty and even though the cleaner arrived while we were on site, they did not improve. In fact we watched to see if the cleaner would pick up all the cans around the bins that had been left by former occupants, no, they were left where they were.

The kettle for hot water at the pot wash was filthy and when we opened it to use it, it was filled with earwigs.

As hot as it was, it would have been fantastic to have enjoyed the showers, but they were very dirty, the shower curtains were grim, the pull cords for the lights etc were filthy as were the windows, floors and the facilities themselves. Basic is fine, dirty is not fine.

It seems that this site was at one time amazing, but something has happened and now it's in a state of disarray; some of the cables are underground without casing and some of the hookups look potentially dangerous.

There is litter all around and tree wraps everywhere, we picked up some of the litter. There is a lump of what appears to be asbestos roofing near a pitch, the dustbin on the outside of the dog exercise area was very full and it's been a heatwave for the longest time so you can imagine the aroma. The dog exercise area, although fenced, is almost impossible to walk through as there are fallen trees and the grass and undergrowth is incredibly overgrown.

Local attractions

A couple of worthwhile attractions are within a 10-minute drive of this park, including the petting zoo and kids’ play area at Shepherds Place Farm. Travel the same distance for Epworth, the birthplace of John and Charles Wesley (10 minutes) too, or make tracks a tad further for transportation-related high jinks at The Trolley Bus Museum (20 minutes). Another ace selection of displays to add to the itinerary are at the aviation-themed Vulcan Experience (20 minutes), an open-air space housing two of the Cold War's most famed aircraft: the Avro Vulcan B2 and the McDonnell Douglas Phantom II. Prefer animals to aircraft? Yomp to Yorkshire Wildlife Park (25 minutes) and Messingham Zoo or meet the rescued creatures at Bransby Horses centre (40 minutes) instead. Top off your trip by traipsing around Brodsworth Hall and Gardens (40 minutes), one of England’s most intact Victorian country homes.
