Time to ask the grandparents to look after the kids for a few days, sort out your Caravan and Motorhome Club membership, and prepare for a blissfully relaxing adults-only holiday at Maisie Mays Certificated Location. Surrounded by open countryside, this peaceful Lincolnshire site is a five-minute drive from the village of Claypole (which has a grocery shop, a butcher’s and a pub serving food) and a 15-minute drive from Newark-on-Trent.
A lavender-fringed driveway leads to the camping field, with spacious (and level) grass pitches for caravans, campers and motorhomes. Also on site are electric hook-ups, chemical disposal facilities and recycling points.
Dogs are welcome, and there’s a seven-acre field where your canine companions can get their daily pre-breakfast and post-dinner walks. During the day, though, chances are they (and you) will want to explore the local area, perhaps going to Balderton Lake (15 minutes’ drive), with tree-shaded waterside walks; Londonthorpe Wood (25 minutes), where you might catch a glimpse of (or hear) woodpeckers; or dragonfly hotspot Whisby Nature Park (25 minutes).
There are several fishing ponds and lakes within a 20-minute drive, including carp-stocked Cromwell Lake Fishery. Golf is another popular activity, with both driving ranges such as Newark Golf Centre (20 minutes) and clubs with lush fairways, such as Sudbrook Moor Golf Club (also 20 minutes).

In addition to opulent interiors (as befits a property that has hosted several royal guests, including Queen Victoria, in its lifetime), Belvoir Castle (25 minutes’ drive) has pleasant manicured gardens originally landscaped by Capability Brown, plus a retail village with a farmers’ shop and events.
After checking out the medieval castle and the Museum of Lincolnshire Life in Lincoln (40 minutes), head out of town to the International Bomber Command Centre, where interesting displays explain what it was like to take part in a bombing mission in World War II. A memorial spire and the Wall of Names honour those who were lost during the war.
In Nottingham (55 minutes), take a picture next to the Robin Hood statue before climbing up to Nottingham Castle, where you can visit a Lace Gallery, see uniforms and weapons at the Museum of the Mercian Regiment, or head underground for a cave tour.
