  • Quiet, secluded and rural site on 10 acres of fenland
  • Two well-stocked fishing lakes
  • Shop, bus stop and local pub all within a few minutes' stroll
Peaceful and with great fishing is how the folk at Ashleigh Lakes sum their pleasant place up – if you're after angling in a quiet and secluded countryside location, bag it here. Family run, Ashleigh is a small, secluded and level site between Peterborough, Spalding and Wisbech in the Lincolnshire Fens. It has two catch and release fishing lakes within a minute or two's walk, stuffed with roach and rudd as well as mirror, common and ghost carp; the bigger lake also has crucian carp, tench and bream. You can fish all the day – and night – long if you wish, either with a day fishing ticket or a 24-hour one; just make sure to bring a valid licence or pick one up at the village post office when you arrive. Two rods are allowed per person. This is a wildlife haven too if your tastes tend more towards nature spotting, with foxes, hares, rabbits, deer and many bird species all roaming or fluttering about... or if you'd just like to amble about or sunbathe, the hedgerows keep the site nicely sheltered from the Fenland winds. Around the region, Ashleigh is 25 minutes' drive from Spalding and Peterborough, 30 from Wisbech and 45 from the biggest nature reserve in the country at The Wash. Amenities include washing-up, toilet and shower facilities all in the corner of the site, together with a chemical disposal point. The village post office is 50 metres from Ashleigh's entrance, as is the local bus stop – although if you ask nicely/are a tad fatigued after a Fens day hiking or cycling, the driver will often drop you off right outside.

Liked: Absolutely fantastic site and the staff are really accommodating, the manager even let me and my partner borrow fishing gear as we were about to buy some but he insisted we tried it to see if we liked it before investing in new gear, site was always kept clean and the toilets cleaned regularly and the showers were hot, went two consecutive weekends because we enjoyed the site, also excellent lake for those new to fishing, will be going back to this site regularly in the future

Liked: The manager and owner of the site were very friendly and helpful. Good sized, flat pitch and not too close to others. The toilets were clean and always well stocked with toilet roll, hand soap etc. Showers were also clean and hot. My partner and I went over the bank holiday weekend and hadn’t originally planned to fish, however after taking our dog for a walk around the lake and seeing how well stocked it was we decided we wanted to give it a go. We told the manager this to check it would be ok for us to fish as we hadn’t told him we planned to on arrival and told him our plans to go and buy some kit. He then told us that we could borrow some rods, a carp mat and a net and give it a go. We had an awesome time, caught lots of nice sized carp and have now decided to take fishing up so will definitely be back to fish and camp again.

Liked: Fantastic site. A very warm welcome from colin the site manager who showed us the amenities on arrival. He then circled round several times a day ensuring all the residents were comfortable and had everything they needed. The fishing was incredible too, almost a fish every cast, ideal to keep the little one interested! Couldn't have wished for a better site. We'll definitely be returning!

Disliked: Nothing at all

Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Loved the location, very peaceful and quiet. Good size pitches with EHU Great Fishing Lake Colin & family were very welcoming and informative Reasonably priced Liked that you could arrive early and leave late - no rush to leave your pitch so able to get the tent dry

Disliked: The one and only negative I had was how hot the water was when I took a shower, it was either too hot or no water at all, I couldn't wash the lather off. As I was the first to take a shower, everyone else in our group used the shower on the right hand side with no issues. Not sure if when someone is using the outside sink to wash pots this affects the water flow etc ???????

Local attractions

As it's the Fens, this is nicely level land around here, just the ticket for gentle walks and bike rides around the local area. As a first stop, amble or have a short pedal along to the Elizabethan Centre a third of a mile away, for bowls, badminton, a pool table or (and) nattering with locals over a cold pint. The local badminton team play most Mondays and Wednesdays and guests are most welcome to join in during their stay. By car, get along to Spalding for an extensive shopping session at the Springfield Shopping Outlet, followed by a wander and a rest around the Springfield Festival Gardens. Peterborough's well worth a day out too, for more shopping as well as strolls along the river, and Boston 40 minutes away is home to the 14th-century Boston Guildhall and a museum at the Maud Foster Tower Windmill.
