  • Quiet site on a Leicestershire field 10 minutes’ drive from Hinckley
  • Mallory Park or Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre 10 minutes’ drive
  • Seasonal produce in the farm shop; breakfast and lunch available
Leicestershire bound? Perhaps you’ll end up at Bradshaw Farm, a site on a working farm situated between the two rural villages of Stapleton and Dadlington, with Hinckley 10 minutes’ drive away. Pitches are on a nicely level field, and there are simple shared shower facilities. Every last weekend of the month (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) and on bank holidays, the site has a range of wine, beer and spirits for guests to buy. There’s also a well-stocked farm shop across the road, where you can pick up seasonal fruit, veg, fresher-than-fresh organic produce and home-grown plants; you can order a hearty cooked breakfast and tasty lunch there too. If you’re looking for a decent selection of pubs and restaurants to try, Hinckley (10 minutes’ drive) is the place to head for; you can top up on any other supplies from the supermarkets while you’re there. In general, this place is a fine choice if you want to get away for some R&R in the countryside. On the other hand, it may not be quite so peaceful on the weekend of July 17–20, when a gathering of the UK’s best tribute bands will be playing at Leicestonbury music festival on the farm, just across the road from the camping field.

Primitive grass campsite (pet friendly)

Liked: Fantastic price and the friendliness of the owner Richard ‘Farmer Giles’ was fantastic.

Disliked: No rubbish waste or recycling facilities on site, we had to take it with us when we left. No hand washing facilities, the sink in the shower shed didn’t have a tap (so also no where to clean your teeth). No dishwashing facilities. Also no grey water or toilet waste disposal facilities (there is a sign to say camping toilets can be emptied at the farm for £5, same cost as camping per person per night.
It is the most basic of sites (but exactly as expected for the cost). It is very much a working farm and so the ‘farm shop’ is also very basic and inside an animal barn, with goats and pigs nearby, so has an authentic country smell.

From the manager: There is a container behind portaloo to empty all your waste at a charge of £5 per item. Regarding sink - the shower head reaches into sink and can be filled with hot or cold water. Other campers have no problem. Teeth cleaning can be done in sink. We would like to say that pigs are on the farm and not on show - there is a strict no entry sign and visitors should not even see pigs. This is Health and Safety and can see you have taken a photograph which you shouldnt have done. The cost of camping pitch is £10 which would accommodate 4 people if necessary. Not sure about the authentic country smell. We have the right to ask campers to take their rubbish away, just so you know. Dishwashing facilities? most people bring a bowll , its not a chalet its a campsite where you can appreciate countryside in all its wonderful glory. Thanks from Farmer Giles for all your constructive? criticism

Bell tent (six person, basic)

Liked: First time on Pitchup, wasn't sure what to expect.
Stayed in a bell tent, there were airbeds and electricity, even a little light and some chairs outside.
No idea if there's WiFi - I set up a hotspot on my phone, and 4/5G was fine to watch footy.
Was way better than I ever would have thought.
Had a really nice stay, and the owners are lovely.
Supermarket is like 6 minutes away.

Primitive grass campsite (pet friendly)

Liked: Rural

Disliked: Very basic with people living there and children running around near my tent late evening. Not good. Only one toilet. They are trying to be too many things and not succeeding at any!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Well anonymous sorry you disliked the site, There are no people living on the site just to put you right! We are a new site with lots of positive reviews, your comments if they were constructive criticism we would take on board. We think this is pure vitriol and you could save it for something more important! Richard can remember you. As for trying to do too many things, at least we are trying and succeeding in the eyes of many other campers who love the site. If you would like to discuss your discontent further we would welcome a call from you

Primitive grass campsite (pet friendly)

Liked: Basic but a good base set up. The owner Richard goes the extra mile to make you feel welcome.

Disliked: Not really an out and out dislike.
It’s just that I am not a fan of portable toilets but when the time came to use them I found them clean and without any noxious fumes.

Local attractions

When golf is your game, you’ll be pleased to know there are several courses within about 20 minutes’ drive of the site. For watching high-octane pursuits like motor-bike racing, you’ll have to catch the right day at Mallory Park Racing Circuit (10 minutes’ drive). Take a waterside stroll in Market Bosworth Country Park (10 minutes), or learn more about the notorious battle of 1485 on guided walking tours at Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre (also 10 minutes), where the kids can dress up as knights for the day and there are occasional weekend enactments of fiercely fought medieval battles. If you’d like to know more about the infamous King Richard III, whose remains were found in a Leicester car park, visit his royal tomb at the King Richard III Visitor Centre (40 minutes). Still in the city, you can clamber aboard rockets at the National Space Centre, and let off steam in East Street Lanes bowling alley (both make great choices for any rainy days with the offspring).
