  • Cosy shepherd's hut on a National Trust farm site in Herefordshire
  • A 45-minute drive from the Brecon Beacons; near the Offa’s Dyke Path
  • Patios with a firepit and grill; buy farm eggs and meat on site
Stylish and cosy is your nest on this 300-acre National Trust farm… Dexter cattle, free-range chickens and arable crops already potter around this place, but you’ll be next in line for this delicious retreat on the border between Herefordshire and Wales. Hiking’s particularly enticing from here, as the site is just off the lengthy Offa’s Dyke Path and 45 minutes from the Brecon Beacons National Park (or for those literary fans among you, it’s a 15-minute drive from the Hay-on-Wye’s bookshops and cafés). As the name suggests, Robin's Nest Shepherds Hut is a comfy little nest is surrounded by the Herefordshire countryside. As for the little touches that make it so cosy, there’s underfloor heating, an electric woodburning stove, a TV with a DVD player, and a bathroom with a walk-in electric shower. For a timely solution to your hunger pangs, the hut has a fully-equipped kitchen for meal prep too. Step out of the stable door and you’ll be in a planted garden with pots and a two-tiered patio. There’s a seating area, firepit and grill ready for some alfresco dining… perhaps pair it with a glass of your favourite red, if you like, or pick up some free-range eggs and home-reared pedigree Dexter beef on site. If you'd like friends to come and join you, it's possible to pitch a tent next to the unit. Whenever you fancy veering off elsewhere, there are several pubs, a shop and restaurants along the River Wye where the food prep part will be sorted out for you.

Robin's Nest shepherd's hut

Liked: The shepherd's hut is cosy and beautiful, and the hosts Nick and Nikki are lovely. They have thought of everything, with lots of nice little touches. Birdsong is everywhere, there are two very friendly farm dogs, and we had fresh eggs from the hens for breakfast. It's an easy drive from Hay-On-Wye and we enjoyed eating dinner outside, then toasting marshmallows over the fire, and watching the bats as dusk fell. My 12-year-old daughter absolutely loved it and wants to go back. Highly recommend.

Robin's Nest shepherd's hut

Liked: Just wow! I booked two nights away for myself, as I was in need of a country escape. From start to finish Robin's Nest did not disappoint. Nicky and Nick were wonderful hosts and extremely accommodating. The hut is surrounded by beautiful farmland and I was lucky enough to be there when the calves and lambs were running around in the fields. There is plenty of green space to walk through which was fab. The hut itself and space around it was beautiful. They have done such an amazing job of making sure it's well kept. Given I was staying by myself, I felt really safe and comforted by my surroundings. It was so peaceful and tranquil, I wish I could have stayed for longer! I popped into the local town, Hay-on-Wye which was only a 15 minute drive away and it was such a gorgeous place to visit, so I would definitely recommend taking a trip there. Don't miss out on an opportunity to stay at this amazing little gem. I will 100% be back!

Disliked: I didn’t dislike a thing

Robin's Nest shepherd's hut

Liked: The shepherds hut was great with everything you would need for a self catering holiday, including tv, microwave, hob, toaster and many other kitchen facilities. A lot of thought has gone into the facility with shower and comfy bed. Towels/tea towels and bedding is all provided. Everything was very clean and well thought out. Our welcome was a delight with the dogs and cows welcoming us along with the cake. Our hosts were very approachable so knew if we had any problems they would help. Loved the local pubs and walking.

Robin's Nest shepherd's hut

Liked: The site has some very stunning views and scenery. This site is on a working farm, so do expect some farm related noises etc. The shepherd hut is fairly well equipped and with a modern but homely feel. The x2 farm dogs very friendly, something I wish( having a dog due to work commitments), so to spend time throwing the ball and playing catch was a great way to spend some time.

Disliked: This is where I would like to offer some feedback to the owners of where some improvements could be made. Firstly access to Fernhall farm. The road is fairly well rutted, with some very large pot holes, this not being an issue in any raised car( SUV, Crossover or Off roader style), but in any normal height car or low slung style sports car, do believe this could be an issue. There should be a small shovel and ash bin, not able to clean out the fire pit after use, luckily I had my hill walking gear, which included a packable spade, as the fire pit was full of ash from a previous visit and had not been cleaned out. The area does have gravel around the front half of the hut, but could do with being extended from the patio area, around to the left side where the bins are located. This is presently grassed, but does mean putting on boots or shoes on to take out rubbish. In the small kitchen area, there is no where to place any dishes that you are washing, a good addition would be a drying mat that could be placed onto of the ceramic hob, where dishes could be put prior to hand drying. This would protect the hob top. The shepherd hut is fairly new but already the frames for the windows are main door are very warped and distorted, this means that there is gaps that let in water and loads of bugs and flies.

From the manager: Hi Christopher, Thank you for your review and for writing such positive comments in our guest book! We are always grateful for any feedback, especially feedback of suggested improvements so we can make any changes for future bookings! :) Unfortunately, being a farm in the middle of the countryside, our roads do get worn due to heavy machinery and due to the bad weather we have had recently, this has made the driveway worse. We do however, fill any ruts in the road regularly to keep on top of it. Your suggestion of a small shovel and ash bin has been taken into consideration and we have since brought one for the hut so thank you for this! :) As our shepherds hut is a small glamping experience, there is minimal room for lots of kitchen space, but it is well equipped and we are due to put in extra worktop space where we can. As the hut is fairly new and due to the wet winter we have had, this can cause natural movement of the wood and window frames, however, we have not experienced any water/rain leakages into the hut, even in the bad recent storms guests have commented on how the hut remained dry and cosy :) We do hope you do come and visit us at some point in the future!

Local attractions

Once you’ve holed up in your new den, you might be thinking of stretching your legs after your journey. If so, there are lakeside walks (or pedalos to put your leg muscles to some light work) at Llangorse Lake (35 minutes’ drive). Radnor Forest (35 minutes) is another place with blood-pumping potential, whether that's hikes past waterfalls or kicking up some dust on the mountain biking trails. Up on the flat summit of Hay Bluff (half an hour), this hike will deliver some more splendid views… and there are more peaks ready for the taking in the Brecon Beacons National Park (45 minutes), including the Black Mountains (an hour and a half), where there are pony treks for those of you looking to give your feet a rest. While hiking’s certainly a breeze to find around here, that’s not all you’ll have to do. Perhaps you fancy a spot of coarse or salmon fishing on the River Wye (10 minutes), followed by a paddle in a canoe? The buzz of an event in the Royal Welsh Showground (40 minutes) or race day in Hereford (40 minutes)? Hereford has a cathedral and Builth Wells (40 minutes) has more on the historical front, including a castle and ancient church ruins.
