  • Peaceful dog-friendly site with views of the historic Sutton Walls
  • A 15-minute drive from Hereford and 20 minutes from Leominster
  • Walk to the local pubs; lots of local bridleways and footpaths
Peaceful, scenic and friendly all at once… Under the Walls is certainly multi-talented in that respect. With a gorgeous countryside setting and views up towards the historic Sutton Walls, this dog-friendly site is thoroughly scenic. So, expect splendid sunsets over the surrounding farmlands, barbecues just before the night settles in and days exploring the area around the ancient Iron Age hillfort at the Sutton Walls, 25 minutes’ walk away… Walkers won’t be twiddling their thumbs (or knocking their feet, rather). The site is surrounded by bridlepaths and footpaths for rambles through the Herefordshire countryside. Your dog can weave around your feet as usual and kids can stop to inspect the wildflowers, as Under the Walls is both dog- and family-friendly. There’s a simple set-up on site, with nice, level grassy pitches and portable toilet facilities. If you need to grab barbecue bits, there’s a small food shop in Marden half an hour’s walk away. Marden has a pub, but there’s another 15 minutes’ walk away, so there’s plenty of good pub grub and local beers on the horizon too. Of course, if you’re after some more niche or non-negotiable barbecue ingredients, the site is handily located between Hereford (15 minutes’ drive) and Leominster (20 minutes), which have more shops. In Hereford, tuck into tasty local food along the river Wye, check out the medieval Mappa Mundi in Hereford cathedral and scope out what’s on offer at the city market.

Local attractions

Part of the Black and White Villages trail, the market town of Leominster (20 minutes’ drive) has typical medieval half-timbered houses. Bike to the other villages past orchards and farmlands or mooch around for a while and see what culinary treats are around. In Hay-on-Wye (45 minutes), cosy and unique bookshops have always been part of the spotlight, but there are other adventures too, like canoeing along the river Wye or horse-riding in the hills. Historic Ledbury (half an hour) has a sweet selection of artisan cider and gin producers, along with access to footpaths into the Malvern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (35 minutes). On that note, the Malvern hills are a top spot for hiking, mountain biking and paragliding. If you’re still craving outdoor adventures, good news… the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (half an hour) has a gorgeous valley walk and one way to take in all the sublime scenery is by canoe.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Empty field with peace and quiet. Toilet and water but served us fine for a one night stop

Disliked: No sign - so when we turned up in the dark it was hard to tell if we were actually there or not. Some of the field is sloping.
