  • Modern, well-maintained rural park 20 minutes' drive from Hereford
  • Half an hour’s drive to Ludlow; 10 minutes to Hampton Court Castle
  • Smart adult-only site with gardens and a bar; breakfast can be ordered
If you’re feeling the need for a peaceful, adults-only break on a well-maintained and spotless contemporary campsite, have a look at The Shires Park. This holiday park has far-reaching views over Herefordshire countryside, and it's only about a half-hour drive from the fab foodie town of Ludlow. Spread over fields edged by carefully tended, manicured gardens, the site has loads of facilities to make things easy for guests, from a spotless shower and loo block to a splendid bar in a converted barn, where work by local artists is exhibited (making a handy distraction on any rainy days) with lots of bench seating outside for alfresco drinks in sunny weather. Friendly staff are on hand here, and food needs are taken care of too, as breakfasts packed into picnic hampers can be provided by prior request. Barbecues are permitted – but if that’s all too much like hard work, there are several foodie pubs within 10 minutes’ drive where you can grab a bite to eat. Sticking to the self-catering? Replenish supplies at the local community shop (five minutes’ drive) and pick up artisan cider from the apple orchards nearby.

Liked: Facilities were really new and clean, friendly staff.

Disliked: Only downside is its near a road which is quite busy during the day, it does quieten off a bit at night but not terribly peaceful.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Loved this camping. My partner and I have been in around 10 camping sites in the past year and this has been the best by far. Very friendly hosts, being a new camping the facilities are new and the toilets are kept very clean. There is also a small bar open all day and the hosts prepare lovely breakfasts. Showers are perfect: lots of pressure and adjustable temperature. Some reviews mention a lot of noise from the road. Yes, the camping is next to a road but this is a small road with very low traffic specially during the night. I would be staying here if I came back to the area.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The facilities were the best I’ve ever stayed in. Keeping showers and toilets that clean on a campsite full of grass cannot be underestimated. They were spotless- and warm! Didn’t use the bar but loved the fact it was there and also a really cool beer garden. If we’d been in a group we probably would’ve used that more. Fire pits were a great shout. Love that option. And just super friendly hosts. A really great place. Also the proximity to little day trips out. Malvern hills, Hereford and lovely Ledbury all perfect for a potter around!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Friendly welcome from the owner who came out to us at the gate. Whole site was very clean and maintained to a high standard. Toilets and showers were very clean and new. Didn't get chance to explore the bar but it looked nice. Lovely little dog run in the centre of the pitch. Overall a good site for someone looking for the basics done well. Plenty of places to get to in the car.

Disliked: Only slight negative was the road noise but this wasn't too much of an issue after 8.

Local attractions

The lovely town of Ludlow (half an hour’s drive) is a joy to explore for its 11th-century castle and ancient cobbled streets. After admiring the half-timbered buildings and poking about in its food shops and market, relax with a cuppa in a tea shop or sneak into a historic pub for a glass of local cider. Opt for Hereford (20 minutes) to learn about the county’s cider-making tradition at Hereford Cider Museum – or, if spirits are more your thing, you can taste and buy local gins and vodkas at Chase Distillery (five minutes). To tick a couple of stately homes off your list, tour the magnificent Jacobean manor at Hampton Court Castle (10 minutes), or have a potter around 18th-century interiors stuffed with period furniture at National Trust - Berrington Hall (20 minutes). Prefer to be out and about in the countryside? There are several golf clubs within 15 minutes’ drive, or you might like to follow the waymarked trails through woodland at Haugh Wood Butterfly Trail (20 minutes), keeping your eyes open for elusive butterflies. Stockton Bury Gardens has seasonal floral displays to discover, while at Newbridge Farm Park (both 15 minutes) you can befriend donkeys, emus and alpacas.
