  • Simple dog-friendly site surrounded by the Herefordshire countryside
  • A 10-minute drive from Hay-on-Wye and Hereford; walks nearby
  • Farm shops, takeaways, a pub and restaurants all a short drive away
Surrounded by the gorgeous Herefordshire countryside, Lower Calver Hill is rather well-positioned for visits to Hay-on-Wye, Welsh hills and a historic village trail. There are a number of local shops and farm shops within a short drive of the site that supply delicious local produce to get you into the countryside fever… It’s certainly not hard to get into the rural spirit on site, given that the site is a smallholding that runs a forest school and has animals including two pigs (named Thelma and Louise), horses (ridden and retired or young and growing), dogs and chickens (which produce some great eggs). Parking is in the farmyard in wet weather or up in a field when it’s dry outside. That means it’s easy to get to nearby destinations such as Leominster (20 minutes’ drive), Hereford (25 minutes) or Hay-on-Wye (25 minutes). Hay-on-Wye hosts the book festival once a year, and at other times, there are activities such as browsing bookshops or canoeing and kayaking on the river Wye. Very handily, the site is close to a handful of footpaths, including the Black and White Village Trail departing from Weobley (10 minutes’ drive). Weobley and Credenhill (10 minutes) both have takeaway options, and the former also has a great pub, restaurant and café. Back at base, the forest school is a lovely place to sit with a cuppa or glass of wine when it’s not in use (butterflies often visit the meadow in the summer). The facilities are only suitable for overnight stays and include water, a composting toilet and yard lights (there are no lights in the field). Note that there’s no vehicle access on the pitches.

Local attractions

With several National Trust properties within driving distance, there’s always a way to shake up your itinerary with some history. The National Trust - Croft Castle and Parkland (25 minutes’ drive) is a historic setting for a walk if there ever was one, and the same can be said for the country house grounds at the National Trust - Berrington Hall (half an hour). You might want to go for a peaceful potter around National Trust’s The Weir Garden (15 minutes), which was a Roman settlement way back. Hereford (25 minutes) also has its fair share of historical sites. There’s Hereford Cathedral, for one, and Mappa Mundi too, a medieval map which shows how the world was imagined back then. As well as having a farmers’ market, Hereford hosts festivals including the Hereford Walking Festival and Three Choirs Festival. Leominster (20 minutes) is another fine location with a farmers’ market and an abbey. Just leae some time for pony trekking in the Welsh hills (from around half an hour).

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Large fields gave plenty of room for people to spread out. Quiet location, good views. Simple amenities with compost toilet and water tap (the most pleasant compost loo I have come across). Interesting neighbours in the form of horses, chickens and a wandering guinea fowl. Plenty of bird and bat life.
