  • Pop-up glampsite for Hay Festival and HowTheLightGetsIn
  • A 40-minute drive from Hereford, 25 minutes from Brecon Beacons
  • Luxury showers, toilets, pamper parlour and 24-hour reception
Planning on heading to Herefordshire market town Hay-on-Wye for the Hay Festival or HowTheLightGetsIn? There’s a pop-up glampsite for that… Trundle along to Hay-on-Wye Festival Camping for handy family-friendly stays within five minutes’ walk of the town centre and festival spots. The site itself is no slouch: it’s in scenic countryside with stunning views of the Black Mountains, there’s 24-hour access to luxury showers and toilets, a pamper parlour and reception, and the owners work hard to keep all of this as eco-friendly as possible (so leave it as you found it, please). There won’t be anyone going hungry during stays either. Hay-on-Wye is a well-known foodie haven, and both festivals will have plenty of options when hunger sets in – and if eating out is a bit of a stretch, self-catering is a cinch with a supermarket within easy strolling distance, and small gas cookers and portable barbecues welcome on site. Guests are asked to keep it down in the evenings so don’t worry about sleepless nights (the literature and philosophy crews aren’t known for their raves anyway). In fact, expecting peaceful evenings among the trees won't leave anyone disappointed.

Disliked: Yurts are a bit too close together for such a large site - you can hear everything (?!?)

Yurt (deluxe, super, two person)

Liked: The facilities were EXTREMELY clean. The showers were spacious and the water was warm. The loos were spacious and had a private bin and sink. Reception had a microwave and a kettle Co op is nearby to grab snacks A short walk from town but restricted mobility pals be advised it is a bit of a walk to the festival itself however shuttles are available in town. Super comfortable bed, a lot of storage. The yurt was lovely and clean. Modestly decorated but had everything we could need! Lovely friendly staff

Yurt (deluxe, two person)

Liked: Yurt was lovely, bed made up with warm bedding, bedside tables, lamp and battery hanging lanterns, hanging mirror, sheep skin rug and mats made it cosy. Toilets were good quality and cleaned and maintained regularly. Didn't use showers but looks OK. Place to wash dishes. Area close to village shop opposite, beautiful countryside

Disliked: Could have done with mowing grass before event started, it was dry weather so not too bad but attracted lots of mossies and flies. Car park had very long grass, would have been very unpleasant if wet weather. Yurts quite close together so can hear neighbor's conversations

Yurt (deluxe, super, two person)

Liked: The bed was comfy, the yurt was clean and the toilets were very nice for a festival site.

Disliked: It was a bit of a walk from the main Hay festival but close to the how the light gets in music festival (although this had finished) Would have been great to have a kettle as there were electric sockets.

Yurt (four person)

Liked: The yurt fitted a family of 4 - and was comfortable/clean. Not much space for extra storage but we managed. If you wanted to bring your own stove/bbq this was also allowed close by. (No open fires though). The facilities were fantastic. Clean and well maintained Hot water at all times for showers. There were hairdryers, straighteners and mirrors for getting ready. Fab location - within walking distance of town and festival and supermarket straight across the road. Even without the festival there are a host of things to do around Hay on Wye.

Disliked: Was charged extra for parking £8 per day, which was included upon further inspection. Refunds can’t be given via card machine as weren’t sure they knew how to do it/ no cash on site. Awaiting a bank transfer.

Local attractions

During the bank holiday weekend at the end of May, stroll along to HowTheLightGetsIn – the world’s largest philosophy and music festival – in Hay-and-Wye, five minutes’ walk from the site, where guests can hasten to listen to music, laugh at comedians (sorry, laugh with), and listen to debates about some of the great philosophical questions facing humankind. HowTheLightGetsIn will be overlapping with the start of the Hay Festival – the world’s biggest literary festival – which is running for 10 days from 23 May to 2 June. That’s 10 days of fab writers, artists, academics, thinkers and performers, as well as craft stalls, food stands and lots and lots of book sellers. If a particular day’s festival line-up doesn’t appeal – or if some exploration beckons on travels to and from Hay-on-Wye – there’s plenty hereabouts to entertain, starting with Hay-on-Wye, where there are nearly two-dozen bookshops to leaf through, lots of foodie hot spots, and scenic castle ruins. If activities are called for, drive the 25 minutes to Brecon Beacons National Park for walking routes or pay a visit to Llangorse Lake for fishing, watersports, sailing and wildlife spotting. Dive into history at Arthur’s Stone Neolithic burial chamber or the National Trust’s Cwmmau Farmhouse, both 15 minutes away, or stay doggedly in the present with a 40-minute car trip to the city of Hereford.
