  • Family- and dog-friendly site on the outskirts of Hay-on-Wye
  • Brecon Beacons National Park five minutes’ drive; Hereford 40 minutes
  • Toilet and shower block and launderette; communal fridge; barbecues
Surrounded by the splendid countryside of Mid-Wales, Hay-on-Wye Caravan Park is an excellent accommodation option – whether you’re into hiking or into the rather more sedentary activity of losing yourself into a good book. The family- and dog-friendly site is a five-minute drive from Hay-on-Wye, the small town on the English border known for its concentration of independent and specialist bookshops. What’s more, it sits a 10-minute walk from the grounds of the famed Hay Festival of Literature and Arts, which takes place at the start of summer (late May–early June) and draws authors, artists and other creative characters to this corner of the world. That’s the bookworms sorted. What about the walkers? Well, there’s plenty of choice for them, too, with Brecon Beacons National Park within a five-minute drive. Explore the park’s hills, woodlands and waterfalls, keeping an eye out for wildlife such as water voles, badgers and bats. It’s worth lingering until nightfall, for the Brecon Beacons is a recognised International Dark Sky Reserve, so you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of the Milky Way and assorted constellations. The proximity to the River Wye also means there’s plenty to do on the water, with several outfits renting out paddleboards and canoes, and arranging guided river trips or canyoning excursions. After all that activity, you might well be ravenous, so stop for a bite to eat in Hay-on-Wye, or purchase your provisions there before heading back to base and getting the barbecue started. There’s a communal fridge freezer on site, as well as a washing-up area. Other amenities include a shower and toilet block (with facilities for disabled guests, too), and a launderette.

Liked: Such an amazing place. The staff are welcoming on arrival and so friendly all the time. They even put a bag of treats together for our pouch in the arrival pack. The people staying on the campsite are also lovely, always saying hello and having a quick chat with you. The toilet and shower facilities are the best I've ever stayed at, spacious, warm and spotless. So much is provided as well at the campsite with shower gel, shampoo, hairdryer, washing up liquid etc. Great view of the sheep in the fields, the moon and the sun setting over the hills. Being so near to the town as well is perfect, we only brought about 14 books!! Out of 30 shops that's not to bad! 😂 We will definitely be back again soon. Miss the place already!

Tracy M. The reviewer booked through Pitchup.com

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: We’ve stayed here a few times but not since last year. Great welcome and friendly staff! We requested a pitch at the rear of the site and had a stunning view over the fields to the Black Mountains. We enjoyed the walk into Hay which was lovely and quiet on the Monday before Bank Holiday weekend. Facilities spotless and showers excellent. Some works being done on the new statics area on the Tuesday before we left but it didn’t bother us. Still prefer that to a pitch near the road…

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Dear Tracy, Thank you very much for your review and the fantastic photos also! Really pleased that you liked the pitch and also that you had an enjoyable walk into Hay. When you come back again of course you can request the same pitch, and if you do happen to stay on a Thursday there is a really good food market in Hay. Best wishes, Lisa & Rob

Local attractions

Spreading along the banks of the River Wye, The Weir Garden (half an hour’s drive) has shaded waterside paths dotted with benches for picnics. Birdlife abounds here – from finches to mallards and woodpeckers – and if you’re lucky you might spot an otter, too. There’s also a walled garden and a glasshouse. The 13th-century cathedral in Hereford (40 minutes) holds the Mappa Mundi, a medieval map of the world drawn on a calf’s skin and adorned with real and mythical beasts, plus dog-headed men and one-legged people. After getting to know these unusual characters, visit the Museum of Cider, with its huge presses, and stock up on this locally made drink. To learn a thing or two about Wales’s mining history, head to the Big Pit National Coal Museum (50 minutes), which occupies a former coal mine. Don a hard hat and join the underground tour, which takes in both the coal faces and the engine houses.
