  • Back-to-basics site right on the River Severn, in Gloucestershire
  • Gloucester and Forest of Dean Cycle Centre 25 minutes’ drive
  • Front-row seats for the Severn Bore; barbecues allowed
If you’ve heard of the Severn Bore and are keen to watch this tidal wave from a front-row seat, make your way to River Severn Bank Pop-up Campsite, in Gloucestershire. The vast riverfront site is secluded and remote (2.5 miles from the main road), and staying here will appeal to those seeking a peaceful wild camping experience. Although you’ll be staying on a working farm, resident cows and sheep won’t be sharing your field, which means that dogs are welcome (so long as you keep them close and clean up after them). Take yourself and your canine buddy on a stroll along the river to Garden Cliff, where you might spot fossils of sea shells and shark’s teeth, plus gulls and newts. The Forest of Dean Cycle Centre (25 minutes’ drive) has bikes for hire and forested trails or, if you’re into angling, you can head to Elton Carp and Catfish Lakes (10 minutes). On site, you can build your own fire. There is usually plenty of driftwood on the riverbank, but if you don’t want to take any chances, you can order logs, plus local meats and cheeses, before your arrival. If you fancy some traditional pub grub, The Lyon Inn is 2.5 miles away, and the nearest shop is in the village of Chaxhill, a five-minute drive away. The owners are on site and available for any queries you may have. Please note there is no electricity on site, and no hot water. There is running water, though, and a composting toilet.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked This was my first time camping properly and it didn’t disappoint. I threw myself into the deep end and thoroughly enjoyed it. The field is in a great location on the river. My children really enjoyed it. There was lots of space to just enjoy the outdoors with no distractions.
The owner messaged as soon as I booked which was great. There’s no check in or out time which made it even more relaxing.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Amazing location on the River Severn. Plenty of space for the kids to be ferral. Beautiful views and very peaceful. Owner offers lots of little extras, we had a Quiche and a Cake which went down a treat. Wild camping with the 2 important things, water and a composting toilet......the rest is up to you!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Peace, tranquility, beautiful location and such a chilled out vibe

We had a fire, chatted, played games and watched the Severn bore - amazing!!!!

Great to get the teenagers off the grid even if it’s only for a night

No facilities except a compost toilet but that was fine by us

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite (solo)

Liked Laura was super helpful and friendly.
Lovely site, quiet, no light pollution and right next to the river.
Added bonus of a two star bore.
Firewood and basic provisions available.
Highly recommend.

Disliked First bit of the drive in as my rear wheel drive vehicle was sliding!
