  • In the grounds of a country pub in the village of Alvington
  • Easy access just off the A48 main road
  • A 10-minute drive from the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley
Aiming to do lots of out-and-abouting? Fancy finishing your days with easy access to pints and a tasty dinner that you didn’t have to cook? Bag a berth at The Blacksmiths Arms in the little Gloucestershire village of Alvington and it’s all yours. Country pursuits are plentiful in the surrounding area: canoeing, horse riding, fishing, golf and mountain bike trails are all within a half-hour drive, and the site is well placed for walks on the Offa’s Dyke Path or in the Forest of Dean. Getting out to all of the above (and attractions including Tintern Abbey, Chepstow Castle and Clearwell Caves) is a cinch as the Arms is handily located just off the A48. And should your fave country pursuit involve a pint of ale by the fire, a game of darts and a plate of pub grub? That’s all sorted too, as the site happens to be attached to a friendly country inn that’s got all of the above, including a menu that turns local produce into a wide range of different dishes. All the basics are in place too – there’s a wifi connection in the pub and clean, tidy toilet and shower facilities out by the pitches.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Everything! The site was lovely, and very quiet. Staff where helpful. Check in was very easy, and we could choose our own pitch. Toilet/shower facilities where basic, but clean and more than adequate. Well worth the money, and we'd definately stay again.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Good pitch size, peaceful location . Nice pub.

Disliked: The facilities for the site very basic and not maintained or stocked regularly. Gents toilet especially not secured to the floor as the securing screws rusted through and snapped. No pot washing up facilities. Grey and chemical waste there but again the very basics and again not looked after. Gave a couldn't care less attitude to the campers. Overpriced especially as they also want you to spend in the pub.

Liked: Was quiet. Pub was nice but never opened when it said it was supposed to be. I.E. Saturday said 12-11pm. Did not open until 5pm so had to go elsewhere for food. However the people were lovely and it was a good stay

Disliked: Showers didn't work. Toilets basic and no Internet

Liked: A lovely place to stay. Pitches nice and large. Not at all cramped. Everyone so kind and helpful. My car actually went flat and the chef Nigel did not hesitate to immediately come and start it. Nothing is too much trouble. Very welcoming.

Disliked: Nothing

Liked: Loved it. Peaceful and good pitches. The chef had taken over the running of the pub and camping. Very very polite friendly and helpful. The food was really good and reasonable priced. In fact everyone was very accommodating. The shower block was a little tired but clean. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay

Liked: The site was very private and very quiet. Booking in was easy and the lady very friendly. Level pitch. Wild rabbits were running around the site.

Disliked: There is no WiFi signal on site at all. The toilet block was very basic, the doors didn't lock in ladies toilets and it wasn't very clean. Very loud music coming from a neighbour.

Liked: Great Pitch on a fairly small campsite, with a nice feel and good location for access to the forest of dean and wye valley as well as good local walks. We had a superb Sunday roast at the Blacksmiths Arms, the pub landlords and locals were really friendly and helpful.

Disliked: The toilet shower block is quite small and basic but ok for the size of the campsite

Local attractions

Active times await… if you’re up for a stroll or few, take your boots over to the Offa’s Dyke Path (10 minutes’ drive) for views over both England and Wales at the same time, or the Forest of Dean (10 minutes) for walks on waymarked woodland trails. More? Saddle up for horseback hacks from a riding centre 20 minutes away, swing your clubs at Lydney Golf Club (10 minutes) or take a mountain bike to the trails in Coleford (20 minutes). If you’re up for a bit of water-based action, set forth for canoe trips from Symonds Yat (half an hour). You’re allowed to take it easy though if you prefer… perhaps with a trip to Tintern Abbey’s gorgeous Gothic ruins (20 minutes), a subterranean tour of Clearwell Caves (15 minutes) or a canter around Chepstow Castle (10 minutes), keeping an eye out for Europe’s oldest castle doors as you go. Run out of puff? Get some steam power and Severn views with a four-mile ride on the Dean Forest Railway (10 minutes).
