Overview of the site
Grass pitches

  • Award-winning Gloucestershire farm site with Malvern Hills views
  • A 10-minute drive to Tewkesbury; 20 minutes to Gloucester Cathedral
  • Tractor tours of the animals; on-site café and occasional restaurant
Fans of animal antics, step this way… stay at award-winning Elmwicke Campsite and you'll be on a working farm surrounded by a flock of Jacob sheep, a herd of rare-breed Gloucester cattle, and the Pygmy goats Mabel and Martha, plus Bacon the pig. As you can probably tell, this spot in the Severn Vale is a proper rural retreat, with fabulous views of the Malverns and Bredon Hill to boost your Gloucestershire break. Site owners (and carers to all those animals) Jon and Ruth opened up the site in 2012; they're fourth-generation farmers and you’ll see them at some point during your stay, whether that’s welcoming you in, delivering wood, cleaning the facilities or having a good old natter. The campsite is a seven-acre flat field where you can choose your own pitch, and camp together if you’re with friends or family. There’s plenty of space for games of cricket, rugby, football, rounders or flying kites, and the owners are more than happy to take guests on a tractor-trailer ride around the fields to visit the animals. Alongside men’s and women’s loos, the amenities block also has showers and a family room with baby-changing facilities. To help you with keeping everybody clean and tidy, there’s also a laundry area with a washing machine. An on-site café is open for breakfast rolls, pastries and fresh coffee to get you going in the morning, and on some nights you can eat at the pop-up restaurant that's run by a fab local caterer. If you’d rather be self-sufficient, barbecues are allowed on site, and you can order meat packs from the farm, as well as hiring firepits and buying bags of wood, which are delivered daily.

Liked: Lovely quiet site for the second week of September, great location close to local shops and also walks. Had a lovely chat with Ruth when we arrived, got some good tips for things to do. Amazing to have a site with wifi that is strong enough to watch some Netflix in the evenings. Perfect views for sunset. Didn't get any rolls or coffee as we had prepped our own, and the cafe wasn't open (there was only 2 pitches full, and I absolutely would not expect them to open the cafe for 1 coffee so this is not a negative at all, it's conscientious of them to only open upon request) Would definitely come back.

Disliked: Contrary to other reviews, the womens showers were not clean. It was odd, as the toilets were spotless - it may be as it was the end of the season, and I know everyone showers in crocs on campsites, but it was a bit offputting. And I really didn't know how to approach this with the owners, I would've felt strange as it wasn't a huge inconvenience, it just baffled me as the toilet/sink area was *so* clean. The shower floors could've just done with a bit more of a scrub/clearing out from the drain areas.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: The warm welcome, been allowed to choose anywhere to pitch in a very large field, so no all in a row facing same way. The toilet block was this sites main attraction, rustic in a way with chipboard walls, but keep wonderfully clean, and stocked, with loo rolls, air freshener and soap. Good sized showers. Although we didn't partake, nice touch been able to order tea/coffee and breakfast rolls for morning, from reception. Loads of kids taking advantage of the football goal in middle. Good to see the animals in surrounding fields.

Disliked: Maybe a larger toilet block as there was some queuing in morning, but maybe because most campers where in tents. A little vamp to get to waste water point, as if full would have been harder to pull up to drain. A fair bit of noise from motorway, but as we'd used site for a 1 night stop off, due to it been so close can't really moan at that.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Clean toilets and shower block. Safe feeling site, ideal for families with plenty of room for children to play.

Disliked: Smoke filled site due to still evening and so many fires burning. Inconsiderate neighbours arriving back at midnight, making fire, opening and closing van door over and over, out talking and drinking or hours. Noisy until late on this particular night

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: This is a lovely open site with plenty of space to pitch, whatever size tent/camper you have. The owners were really polite and happy to help. I had a great breakfast roll in the morning and the coffee was really good. I stopped over on my way to Devon, but would certainly stay here again for a longer period. Excellent family site, but also good for a lone traveller as I felt safe and welcomed.

Disliked: Nothing. All good

Local attractions

Gather the kids up for games of mini-golf at Sherdons Golf Centre’s Pirate Adventure (five minutes’ drive), or let them have a look at the Harry Potter film locations in Gloucester Cathedral (20 minutes). They can follow treasure trails at Puzzlewood in the Forest of Dean (both 50 minutes), where you can also hike forest paths or up the activity levels and get some cycling in. Keen for more exercise? Have a go at skiing or tubing at Gloucester Ski and Snowboard Centre, or head for Sandford Parks Lido in Cheltenham (both 25 minutes), with its gorgeous Art Deco architecture and two outdoor pools to cool off in on sunny days. Mooch around indie shops in Tewkesbury (10 minutes), where you can also visit the historic abbey, grab an ice-cream or relax on a boat trip along the Severn and Avon rivers. Mellow-stone Cotswolds towns to add to your itinerary include Broadway (half an hour) for its delightful architecture and design museums, and Stow-on-the-Wold (40 minutes) for its cracking selection of antique shops.
