The adults-only riverside field
Large field with shelter and safely fenced off from the river

  • Peaceful riverside pop-up site in the Derbyshire Peak District
  • Peak District National Park 15 minutes’ drive; Chatsworth 25 minutes
  • Dog walks straight from the pitches; Barlow pubs 10 minutes’ drive
Overlooking Barlow Brook in gorgeous Derbyshire countryside, Riverside Valley Camping is a peaceful family-run pop-up site on a smallholding that’s home to a herd of dairy cows. The ethos here is simplicity: the owners have kept things basic with minimal facilities to preserve the calm of the surrounding woodland. This means no showers, no electricity and lights off at 10pm please. There are two camping areas: the field designated for adults has riverside pitches, while the family camping meadow is safely fenced off from the water. Chargeable extras include firepits available for hire, while you can cuddle gentle calves and take them for a (supervised) walk for an extra fee, and there’s the option to bottle-feed lambs in late spring. The whole site is dog-friendly, and there are lots of easily accessed footpaths around for exercising them. They might also like to have a dip in the river, but please just remember to clean up after them and keep them on leads around the pitches. If you’re a keen hiker, you can look forward to long moorland and valley rambles in the Peak District National Park (15 minutes’ drive), and Derbyshire heritage landmarks are easily accessed too – Chatsworth House, its grounds and opulent state rooms are 25 minutes’ away by car.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked I loved the peace and quiet of this site. A family and an adult section. We were in the family section and still very peaceful. The owner comes around everynight with logs and fire pits if needed. Very friendly and will definitely be returning.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite (adults only)

Liked Quiet site, great hosts! Went solo with my dog, plenty of walks around from the site & met a lot of friendly neighbours who gave recommendations for walks & places to go, as did the site owners.

I had a visit from the owner, offering a fire pit and logs & just to make sure everything was okay.

Would definitely come back!

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked The huge selling point was the owners. The owners were so so genuine, down to earth and just lovely people. Really chatty and approachable. Nothing was too much trouble.

The fields were very large with some really lovely spots. The site did get very very busy, I think one night there was over 20 on just one of the fields, however it was big enough that everyone seemed happy enough and had more than enough space. I loved that you could pick your own pitch and it’s very flexible with what you can bring. We like to bring a gazebo and a lot of places don’t allow but here it was no problem.

Stunning area, at the edge of the peaks, lovely villages surrounding and plenty to do in the area should you wish. We stayed for 2 nights and stayed on site the entire time with no problems finding enough to do between going for a wander to see the horses/cows and for a walk to the waters edge. We also took a bit of an explore through the side of the adult field through the forest and found a lovely walkway and accidentally ended up on a private fishing lake next door which was stunning!! (This did however mean hiking through bushes/going off track so not an easy access🤣) they offer calf cuddling for £10 per person, we didn’t do it but was tempted! Really lovely unique idea.

Log burners and logs can be hired for £15 which I think is another fab option and really reasonably priced, however I’d book and pay for this via their website beforehand to reserve one, as on busy nights like when we stayed we didn’t manage to get one on the first night. Owner was fab about it and we still got some wood from them and did a fire in our BBQ instead so this wasn’t a problem for us at all.

Disliked There was only 2 portaloos to supply both of the large fields, they became full, smelly and dirty very quickly, despite the owners trying to keep on top of them. There were large puddles on the floor, waste overspilling and people waiting around them. However can imagine this isn’t a problem usually and only an issue during busier periods, I would still say more possibly need adding for the amount of plots offered out per night.

There was a drinking water tap which was fab, however I would say is it is at the entrance of the first field, so it’s quite a walk if you stay in the back field, so bring large bottles/water buckets to fill so that this isn’t an issue.

Lastly the rubbish, there was only two small black bins next to the portaloos which got absolutely stacked with rubbish. It was completely overflowing and surrounded with rubbish. It was mentioned that on the website it states for campers to take all rubbish away with them, I booked via Pitch Up and cannot see anything that states that? So maybe others wasn’t aware of that rule either, that been said there was chairs and all sorts getting left which I find totally unfair on the owners, so definitely don’t think the amount of rubbish was the owners fault and was more so campers being disrespectful.
