Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Great facilities, quiet location, easy access to Mam Tor

Disliked: 3 minute timer on the shower, would be better if it was 5. Just about managed to get done in 3 minutes :)

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Great location. Simple facilities, but everything there that you need. If you are going with caravan, the entrance to the pitches is very narrow.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Lovely site in a great location right next to Mam tor. Clean toilets, wash up area and showers that are £1 for 3 minutes. Pull up, find a pitch, easy as that. Will be staying again very soon.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Loved the views, serenity, peaceful nature of cows mooing, and being surrounded by fields. Sun all day on the field, and great for moon-bathing too. Perfect location for walking up Mam Tor just have to cross the road and you’re there! Great loop to go down the other end and back to campsite through Castleton and up Winnats pass. Well worth a stay to tick off this area from your list.

Disliked: Toilet and showers very basic in farmhouse building, price reflects this. But has everything you need and doesn’t bother us anyway!

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: The site was spacious & great location for climbing Mam Tor for sunrise as it’s only 20-30min walk away.

Disliked: The campsite was excessively noisy at night and there were no measures in place to manage this. Some noise at night comes with camping like talkings, dogs barking, late arrivals setting up etc. but on this campsite a couple of groups of campers were playing loud music until 2am onwards. I messaged one of the contacts on the booking confirmation at about midnight to ask if there was anything they could do and got no response (not even the next day so we had no confidence anything would improve). We ended up getting out of our tent and politely asked one of the groups to turn the music off at 1am as it was getting late and got a rude response back when we did. We pretty much had a sleepless night due to the excessive noise so ended up leaving the next morning instead of staying for our full trip so it was an expensive stay for just 1 night. Never been to a campsite where other campers have been so inconsiderate before!

Local attractions

Fancy yourself as a lord or lady of the manor? The stately home and estate at Chatsworth House (35 minutes) might be the closest you’ll get. With a 105-acre garden, trout stream and nine rooms with painted ceilings, picnics are quite grand here, as is the scenery for your afternoon stroll or kitchen tour. You’ll certainly feel above everyone else, in the literal sense of the phrase, at Bamford Edge (20 minutes). There’s an uphill hike to this lookout over Ladybower Reservoir… pretty much primed for a photo opportunity, right? Further north, Derwent Reservoir (half an hour) has a fabric of walking and cycling routes plus fishing spots along the water, with bicycle hire available for those of you who don’t have your own pair of wheels. But what about the underground? Well, before you go down under into Castleton’s caverns, you’ll want to conquer Mam Tor (20 minutes' walk) first. It’s in the same area as the Blue John Cavern (25 minutes' walk/five minutes' drive), Speedwell Cavern (35 minutes' walk/five minutes' drive) and Treak Cliff Cavern (55 minutes' walk/10 minutes' drive), where there's everything from an 18th-century lead mine to musical events and rope-making works.
