  • Dog-friendly site on a hill farm on the edge of Ladybower Reservoir
  • Access to walking and cycling trails; half an hour’s drive to Bakewell
  • Firepits to hire; fisheries, bike hire and pub five minutes' drive
Raring to go for Peak District hikes and bike rides? On the edge of the Ladybower Reservoir, which is famed for its lost drowned villages and connection to the Dambusters, Crookhill Farm is a traditional hill farm and a splendid base for walking, cycling and other outdoor activities. How so? First of all, it’s right on the Ladybower Loop and Figure of Eight loop. Other well-documented routes to take include an hour and 45-minute walk to Win Hill. Step straight out of the site and onto the bridleway for yet more gorgeous views and strolls in the wilds. If you’re more of a crag scaler yourself, it's good to know that the popular Bamford Edge is a five-minute drive away. Agile with a fishing rod? The Ladybower Fisheries are also a five-minute drive away. And if you’re in need of two wheels for your adventures, the Upper Derwent Visitor Centre (five minutes’ drive) has bike hire facilities. Foodies, take your pick from the fab grub at the traditional pub five minutes’ drive away. Hathersage (10 minutes’ drive) has a wide variety of pubs, restaurants and shops, along with clay pigeon shooting and an outdoor swimming pool. A little further on, finger-licking ice cream can be tracked down at Hope Valley Ice Cream (15 minutes). The facilities at Crookhill Farm are simple, with just portable toilets on offer, but guests are welcome to set up off-ground campfires and barbecues. There are a number of firepits available to hire (with firelighters, kindling and logs included). Well-behaved dogs are welcome, as long as they’re kept on a lead at all times while on the site (including its footpaths). Please note that campervans will require levelling blocks.

Local attractions

Pull out a map and start circling those spots that take your fancy… you might get carried away with the variety of activities around these parts. Take a look at the Upper Derwent Visitor Centre (five minutes’ drive), for example… just in this one (ultra-scenic, wildlife-friendly) spot, there’s bicycle hire, a food kiosk, gift shop, dam wall and a Lost Village Trail. Mountain bikers, make way for the pump and mountain biking track at Hope Sports Club (15 minutes). Cyclists, get to it on the Monsal Trail (half an hour), where you can whizz through old tunnels on a disused railway line. Looking for a hiking location? Suss out the limestone ravine Chee Dale (35 minutes). For some food to keep you going, visit Bakewell (half an hour), where there are monthly farmers’ markets, tasty Bakewell tarts in their hometown and a peaceful riverfront. Chatsworth House (half an hour) has an art collection, a playground and farmyard to fill a family day out. For show caves, Castleton (20 minutes) is the go-to.
