  • Wild camping on private pitches in Derbyshire woodland near Matlock
  • A 15-minute drive to Gulliver’s Kingdom; Chatsworth House 20 minutes
  • Firepit and running water on site; café, hiking and cycling nearby
The people at Henley Park Wild Camping were serious when they named their site, for this really is rather like wild camping in secluded woodland. At this peaceful pop-up spot on the outskirts of Matlock in Derbyshire, you can pitch up wherever you like: in a quiet corner on your own or next to other campers around a firepit if you're feeling sociable. Whatever you decide, you’ll wake up to fine views and the sound of birds chirping in the morning. It's not completely wild here however – there are strings of solar fairy lights hung around the camp to help create a magical vibe, and a bunch of facilities to make life easy. These include running water (running off a silent generator, which is only on until 10pm), a washing-up area, loos and charging points for phones. On a Sunday, you can walk to Tansley Sunday Market and Car Boot Sale (20 minutes) to have a nose around stalls selling anything from local Bakewell tarts to ready-made curries. A popular café two minutes' walk away is known for its tasty Sunday lunch and sausage baps to get you going in the morning. As well as walking and cycling, there’s fishing for rainbow trout at Ogston Reservoir (five minutes’ drive), plus plenty of culture: investigate Derbyshire’s industrial past at Cromford Mills (15 minutes) or check out stately piles like Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall (both 20 minutes). Kids won’t be bored either, with all the thrill rides at Gulliver’s Kingdom (15 minutes) making for a fun-filled day out.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The choice of wild camping pitches either on the hill amongst the heather or in the wooded area. Friendly service with a little onsite bar with fire pit. Camp fires encouraged with marked out individual areas. The simple added rope swings in trees added fun for all

Disliked: Only x2 showers and toilets. Was ok for number staying whilst we were there but I'd imagine if full not enough. Water was freezing each time, not ideal. X1 dish wash also

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Really friendly owners. Great to be able to choose the pitch we wanted as the site was pretty quiet. On site bar was a bonus and sold a good range of drinks. Having a fire pit by the pitch was good for the evenings. Good location for visiting the Peak District.

Disliked: Only a minor thing but there was no hot water when we stayed - but it is 'wild camping'.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Incredibly friendly, fantastic secluded pitches, lovely bar, just a nice place to be.

Disliked: Some pitches are quite stoney, just bring some strong pegs!

Cool concept but limited ‘good’ spots, the rest are unlevel & bedrock.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Friendly welcome and cool communal bar for socialising.

Disliked: It is a lot more ‘wild’ than advertised. There are some pretty, secluded pitches however these quickly get taken up. The spot we were advised to pitch on was impossible to put the tent up due to the bedrock, and very unlevel. We tried several different spots but were unsuccessful.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: This campsite is lovely with lots of private pitches in the woods and separate areas where you can camp as well as open areas for bigger groups. The toilets and showers are clean and have everything you need. The owners are friendly and relaxed and there is even a bar, I would recommend this campsite to anyone.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The site was a fantastic experience all round. The bar was a wonderful space for families and adults alike and it was a real surprise to be able to feel like we were wild camping, yet have the option to listen to live music and play pool or get something to eat all surrounded by fairy lights and beautiful scenery. The people running the place were incredibly welcoming and we loved that we could have a campfire too. There were some flat open fields similar to your average campsite but the best pitches were those that felt much more ‘off road’ and ‘hidden away’. Even possible to hide from the wind and find some protection from the elements in amongst the foliage. The toilet and shower were simple and clean and nice to use, especially given that this place feels remote and ‘off grid’.

Disliked: Absolutely nothing to dislike. What a fabulous place!

Liked: Great that you can simply look round and find a pitch right for you. The bar is also a great addition. Location was perfect.

Disliked: Some parts needed a bit of love, toilet and shower facilities weren’t great either.

Local attractions

At Matlock Farm Park (five minutes’ drive), the kids might not know what to do first: the pony rides, the enormous jumping pillow or the go-karts? There’s also a petting zoo where they can feed farmyard animals and meet more exotic creatures like alpacas, wallabies and meerkats. You can ride a vintage double-decker tram at Crich Tramway Village (10 minutes), with its recreated period setting. The route takes you past a leafy park with a bandstand and on to a picnic area with views of the Amber Valley. There’s also a collection of trams, starting from a horse-drawn model from the 1870s. Take a cable car to the Heights of Abraham (15 minutes), a hilltop estate with far-reaching views of the Derbyshire Dales. After your flight, you can go on a guided tour of two caverns, let the kids blow off some steam at the adventure playground or simply stroll along the shaded paths.
