Grouse primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Nice area, friendly staff, and decent facilities.

Disliked: Distance between the pitches and facilities (it would be nice if there was a closer set of toilets). Also, the free WiFi didn't work very well in the field.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: The site always has a friendly feel. The site has undergone some nice improvements and there is no view to match it - I just love it here. Local walks are fantastic and the little shop has lots of nice fresh produce. Another great trip and we enjoy being able to have a camp fire.

Disliked: The new showers are still not ready and although functional the current ones are pretty dated, dark and cubicles are small. It isn’t a massive problem but worth mentioning.

Grouse primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Great campsite. Beautiful views. Perfect for hiking. Decent cafe and shop on site. Great pub serving delicious food next door. 10 min walk from train station ( we didn’t drive there). Friendly and very helpful staff. Stayed an extra night as we didn’t want to go home. Would recommend this site to everyone. Families and singles alike.

Disliked: Only issue I have is the showers and toilets need updating. It would help in the ladies if they provided a chair or bench so we could put on our socks and shoes from a sitting position after taking a shower

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: Excellent location right in the Penine Way. Great starting point for the many amazing hiking routes. No late night noise and groups of single sex parties. Lovely family vibe.

Disliked: Shame there wasn’t more electric hook up points.

Sparrowhawk primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Great services, nice site, obvious improvements year on year with a previously challenging drop to drive up and down replaced by dedicated parking. Fantastic area as always and the café and shop are wonderful.

Disliked: Lack of defined pitches lead to some odd overlaps of space when pitching, with some new arrivals pitching intrusively close to others while others pitched at an angle across space that could accommodate two or more mid-sized tents. The slope of the site does make it more challenging, but plan your pitch and be considerate of others and you'll be fine.

Local attractions

Draw a straight line from this well-placed site and you're bound to come across something that tickles your fancy. Heading west? Stop off for strolls at Ladybower Reservoir (25 minutes' drive). South? Buxton's fancy shops and theatres are on hand, as are the gorgeous grounds of Chatsworth House (40 minutes). Up for some underground explores? This site is a breezy 15-minute drive from Castleton, a village deep in the White Peak where there are caves and caverns aplenty. Bobbing up and down along underground watercourses is on the cards at Speedwell Cavern, where subterranean boat trips are up for grabs. The nearby Blue John Cavern, meanwhile, also has much to marvel at, including Waterfall Cavern and its shimmering multi-coloured dome… When you emerge bleary-eyed back into broad daylight, you’ll probably be struck by the shadow of mighty Mam Tor (10 minutes from base). Hike up this handsome hill for a three-mile circular trail that'll stretch your legs and open your eyes to some exceptional vistas – on sunny days you'll also likely have the bonus sight of daredevil paragliders circling and swooping overhead.
