  • Back to basics wild camping on a Derbyshire working farm
  • Chatsworth House and Ashbourne within a half-hour drive
  • In the Peak District National Park, between Bakewell and Buxton
If you’re looking towards the Peak District with a vision of gliding down trails or pottering around its towns, then cosy down on a working farm in the Derbyshire countryside. Five Wells Campsite is in a particularly intriguing spot with plenty of rural scenery… as well as being in the Peak District National Park, this site is next to the Five Wells chambered tomb, a Neolithic tomb that has been registered as a site of historical interest. If an active break is what you have in mind, then you’ll be off to a head start here, as the large field is surrounded by many splendid spots for a walk or bicycle ride, including the High Peak Trail and Tissington Trail (although, you might also like to consider a rewarding mile-long walk to the local pub). Let yourself in on the history of the nearby tomb too – there are more details and artefacts about this tomb in Buxton Museum. Conveniently, the site is well-situated for exploring two of the Peak District’s characterful towns, 15 minutes’ drive away from both Buxton and Bakewell (where you may get your hands on its famous baked goods). Of course, there are many cosy places to eat in in these towns, but there are also several pubs within 10 minutes’ drive and a café crossed with a book shop five minutes’ drive away. Those with a sweeter tooth can also hunt down ice cream shops in Pomeroy, five minutes’ drive away, or Tagg Lane in Monyash, 10 minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions

Once you’ve called by Buxton and Bakewell, there are many more Peak District towns that you may want to tick off your itinerary. You may want to let out your artistic side with arts and crafts in Leek (half an hour’s drive), rejuvenate in a Matlock (half an hour) spa or dally around the marketplace in Ashbourne (half an hour). Go where the fashionable society once lived too… Chatsworth House (25 minutes) has wildly decorated gardens, country house architecture and now a reel of activities for young and old, from picnicking in the grounds to a rope park and trampoline in the farmyard. What other prime spots are around? Well, there’s the gorge at Chee Dale (20 minutes), the cavern at Poole's Cavern & Buxton Country Park (15 minutes) or the six-kilometre hike past waterfalls, bridges and natural pools at Three Shires Head (25 minutes). To the north and down underground, at Speedwell Cavern and Blue John Cavern (both half an hour), you may tour mining caverns, see Blue John stone or take an underground boat trip.
