Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Clean and tidy site kept well nice view from camping field

Disliked: Thought woman who ran it was a bit sharp with people and seems obsessed with people using toilets. Code to input every time you wanted to use toilet or shower. Not really enough toilets and showers if site is busy and we're closed from 12pm until 2pm according to notice for "cleaning" they were clean but 2hrs closed seemed alot. Most sites we have stayed have a small freezer for freezer blocks for campers to rotate to keep milk fresh etc but no freezer here. There are only four electric hook ups as far as we could tell. Alot of sites also provide a couple of electrical sockets to just boost a phone but none at all. Road noise is quite loud and continues all night plus the Manchester flight path above so would advise ear plugs if it bothers you. we used them and it was fine. we just felt the site was taking the little things away that make us want to return and as lovely the area is would use another site next time

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The pitches had plenty of space, and you park next to your tent which is really handy. There was a beautiful view of the hillsides from the campsites. The toilets and showers were kept clean, and the showers were hot. Reasonable check in and check out times. Friendly staff at the pub. Nice quiet campsite.

Disliked: You can't control the temperature on the showers and they were a tad too hot for me, but I'd rather too hot than too cold personally. The showers were quite basic with no mirrors, and only two showers. Luckily one was always free. The pub is quite small, so if you're planning to eat there I would recommend prebooking that. The only reason I wouldn't stay here again is because there are so many campsites to choose from in the peak district, that I would rather experience somewhere new.

Liked: Nice spacious pitches, good facilities with hot showers, good walks straight from the site. Friendly staff.

Disliked: Road noise from the A515, but bearable. Bit pricier than we normally spend.

Local attractions

Leisure ramblers and hardy hikers alike, get set for days of Peak District outings on foot along the local hiking trails and long-distance paths. Popular picks include the 46 miles of the Limestone Way, running through the White Peak of the Peak District National Park from Castleton south to Rocester in Staffordshire, and the Midshires Way 230-mile path from the Chiltern Hills to Stockport via Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Hikers can also access the Tissington (13 miles) and the High Peak (17 miles) trails close to the pub for a (relatively) easier Peak District wander. Or set off by bike instead via the High Peak Trail at Parsley Hay, three to four miles from the pub and the closest place for bike hire if you haven't brought your own wheels (and for bike repair if need be). From here, the High Peak joins the Tissington Trail; set off on either for scenic rides among Peak District limestone, or pedal further on part of the 327-mile Pennine Cycleway where it meets with the High Peak Trail around Buxton. A stop is at the site if you'd rather get around by bus (one service per day runs to Buxton and Ashbourne), or the folks in the pub can put you in contact with a local taxi firm.
