Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Spacious and peaceful site with amazing views and a friendly relaxed owner. There are clean, basic facilities and numbered, and almost level, plots.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Lovely quiet spot. Lots of space - didn't see my 'neighbours'! Lovely views and sunset. Fresh water, Friendly welcome.

Disliked The porta-loos - that's an experience I will never forget - they were full and smelly! My pitch was on a slope - might be ok in a caravan but impossible in a tent - I kept rolling to one end in the night. The lower terraces looked flatter.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Fantastic price, Ed the host, clean facilities and a shower!!! Loved it. Each space had a picnic table, can hire a fire pit and buy wood which means you don’t have to take these things. Good size plot for tent and car. Great views. Plenty of places to visit not far way including Carsington water, Dovedale stepping stones. Thank you.

Liked Fantastic location, Ed is super friendly and the facilities were excellent and clean. The views were great, didn’t have to take wood, fire pit as these were available for a small price.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked This site is beautiful. We wanted to find a wild camping spot and this ticks all the boxes but has the basic amenities that you need. If you are looking for a glamping experience, this is not the site for you! The views are incredible and the freedom to have a BBQ and camp fire makes this place perfect. Fires are not permitted in the Peak District National Park but this site sits just beyond the boundary. The owners were friendly and helpful on arrival and really informative when we left the site. I would recommend this little gem to any campers who enjoy a proper back to nature experience.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Lovely campsite with stunning views and spacious pitches. We brought our own fire pit, but you can also hire one on site and buy wood from Ed the farmer, who is incredibly helpful and friendly.

Disliked The toilet block and showers could do with updating but can’t really complain because they were kept very clean and tidy.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Beautiful view. Ed the Farmer was very friendly.

Disliked Not sure how owners are getting away with charging £30 per night. 2 portaloos and 2 (only 1 working at the time we stayed) plumbed in toilets. Showers dirty, no hot water.. everything just very cheap and old.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Friendly welcome by Jon. Friendly fellow campers. Site sloping so absolutely beautiful views from every pitch. Pitches good size. Water taps around site. Fire pits for hire. 2 porta-loos, toilet block with 2 toilets (1 out of order throughout our stay). Shower block with 2 working showers. Washing up facilities. Basic facilities but reflected in the value-for-money price.

Disliked Porta-loos - awful things but better than nothing!

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked A wonderful back to nature camping site. Incredibly peaceful, magnificent views and an awesome and very friendly farmer Ed to welcome us and answer all our needs! You can have fire pits and there are 2 showers, good pot washing facilities, and a mix of portaloos and flushing toilets.

Ed was awesome and cares very much about his site, and wants everyone to have the best possible experience. We went with friends and we would definitely go back again. The pitches were very large and well spaced out, with four terraces and big grassy margins inbetween.

Disliked Nothing. Just be aware the terraces have a slight slope, it didn't bother us but take choc blocks if you're in a camper

Local attractions

Historic towns? Terrific trails? Prehistoric sites? Absolutely. For the former, work a visit to the market town of Ashbourne (10 minutes’ drive) or the spa village of Matlock Bath (20 minutes) into your itinerary. For the latter, Hob Hurst's House (40 minutes) is a prehistoric burial mound – and just another addition to a long list of historical spots across the Peak District, including the Nine Ladies Stone Circle (half an hour), Arbor Low Stone Circle and Gib Hill Barrow (25 minutes), Tissington Hall (15 minutes), Kedleston Hall (25 minutes) and the Crich Tramway Village (half an hour). When it comes to trails, there’s a very splendid selection about. Perhaps a 13-mile cycle on the Tissington Trail (10 minutes) beginning in Ashbourne? The limestone gorge and country park at the Heights of Abraham (20 minutes)? The Dovedale (25 minutes) river walk to the Stepping Stones and the Thorpe Cloud? For those who like a paddle or a cycle, Carsington Water (15 minutes) is an attractive candidate. Family-friendly days are bound to be packed with activities there, and the same goes for the family-friendly theme park Gulliver's Kingdom (20 minutes).
