  • No-frills farm campsite 10 minutes’ drive from Winnersh in Berkshire
  • LEGOLAND® Windsor Resort half an hour’s drive; Thorpe Park 45 minutes
  • Camping field bounded by woodland; two pubs within five minutes’ drive
When you’re looking for a slice of country living under canvas, but equally well can’t face pottering down too many country lanes, Ellis' Hill Farm Campsite will suit you very well. At 10 minutes’ drive from Winnersh in Berkshire, this peaceful farm site is close to all the major road networks. Even better news – for the kids if not your pocket – it’s within half an hour by car of family attractions like LEGOLAND® Windsor Resort and Beale Wildlife Park. Just double check the directions on your way to this splendid place, as Satnavs may direct you through a ford and you don't want to end up with a soggy bottom. Sheltered by tall trees, the camping field is mostly level, but has a few undulations. You’ll need sturdy footwear, and as it’s only mown once a year, if you’re a repeat visitor you’ll see how the meadow grows and changes through the seasons. Also be aware that there’s no electricity to hand, so bring torches for wandering around your pitch after dark. The surrounding woodland is a fascinating habitat for wildlife. Don’t be surprised if you encounter the odd deer or sneaky fox – just please make sure your food is stored away from all animal foragers. Barbecues are allowed on site, but of course you can also sneak off to the two local pubs (both around five minutes’ drive) for a pint and helpings of comfort food.

Primitive grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: It's a nice well kept field in the countryside. A beautiful drive into the site and a friendly owner. It is a basic site, toilets and a small but handy shop are the only facility, so if you want more, this isn't the site for you, but we had a lovely stay, thank you.

Primitive grass and earth travel trailer campsite

Liked: This campsite was exactly as described - very basic facilities, no showers, only toilets which are by no means modern but the owner does a good job at keeping them clean. Lovely family run cafe on site for breakfast. The owner was really friendly. I would definitely recommend this site if you want simplicity. We were able to have fire pit (logs available to buy from the farm or plenty of wood to collect from fields / woodland) and enjoy watching the stars. Bring a torch as there are no lights. Perfect for a stop over when visiting near by attractions.

From the manager: Thanks for your lovely review and your advice about torches. The stargazing really is good here! We’re so glad you enjoyed your stay and we hope to see you again soon.

Primitive grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Facilities were clean and maintained, separate toilets and extra feminine hygiene products were provided. Option of renting a fire pit, and can buy breakfast at cafe in site. We found the pitch quiet and peaceful, with all other guests being friendly. Could hear reading festival, however only the base and was interesting to see who was playing on bbc iplayer. Owners had a quick visit to make sure everything was okay.

Disliked: No dislikes

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your great review. The distant thud of Reading Festival doesn’t seem to worry most people. Like you, they tend to embrace it and try to figure out who’s playing! We hope to welcome you again soon.

Primitive grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: We enjoyed a very quiet camping experience at Ellis Hill Farm. The owners were both really friendly and always will ing to help. Lots of walking routes which we explored. We would definitely be looking to return. If you are looking for a back to nature experience, I would highly recommend, as it is a nice quiet site with things to do locally.

Primitive grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Excellent location - very close to Reading, and easy to travel in. Lovely staff - the owners were friendly and helpful. The farm shop was great for some breakfast and snacks, and we were able to rent a firepit and buy some logs. There were several toilets. There was plenty of room so our tent was not too close to anyone else.

From the manager: Thank you for your great review. Thanks also for adding photos of your very impressive catering setup! See you same time next year, if not before!

Liked: Answered all my questions before we turned up. Greeted us at the pitch and showed us where everything was even had bacon rolls at the farm shop! Really lovely rustic site!

Disliked: Only the neighbour next to us who decided 130am was the best time to call his friend and discuss how he had taken a wrong turn and driven in the ford. Oh and how cold it was and wet all the clothes were! You can’t pick your neighbours ;)

Primitive grass and earth travel trailer campsite

Liked: The site has great access and plenty of parking on arrival. Reception area we were created well and good directions to our pitch. The pitch was of a very good size and great views. Fresh water close to the pitch. The toilet/shower blocks are clean and sticked well. The site itself is split in sections this gives a great sence of privacy for all. The cafe serves good food and friendly staff on hand.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike

Liked: Good location. That's the only positive!

Disliked: The toilets were disgusting. The men's was much larger but still gross, the women's had one toilet, a very dodgy sink, it was dirty and stunk. Music started playing somewhere at 11pm, and 2 girls were shining torches towards our van at 2am, so not all that restful either! Way overpriced IMO.

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. We’re glad you liked the location. It really is a pretty place. It’s a shame that you didn’t bring any of your concerns to our attention during your stay. We do try and keep the toilets clean and would certainly have checked them over for you if you had requested us to. As regards music and torches etc. you have our phone number, we live on site and we are on call day and night to deal with any unpleasantness if it arises. The many repeat bookings we have had this season would seem to suggest that guests are broadly happy with our pricing. We have had overwhelmingly positive reviews about what a family friendly site this is and we are truly sorry that this is not the experience you had.

Primitive grass and earth travel trailer campsite

Liked: Pros - good location to stay 1 night and venture to Legoland, lovely and polite gentleman who owned the campsite who was very kind and helpful, perfect for what we needed for 1 night and even saw a young deer. Great space for children to explore too on the field

Disliked: Daughter wouldn’t use the female toilet due to cobwebs and the darkness of them (couldn’t get light to work when closed the door) Also noticed women using the male toilets as there was only one 1 female toilet and quite a few males toilets. Male toilets were cleaner too. However it was perfect for what we needed it for and incredibly priced too. Useful and Precise instructions on how to get there too!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your kind words about the campsite in general and the welcome you received. Thank you also for your feedback on the loos. We try to keep the cobwebs down, but are fighting a bit of a losing battle there admittedly. We have checked the light in the female loo and it seems to be working ok. We plan to make improvements though and your comments are appreciated. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Primitive grass and earth travel trailer campsite

Liked: Loved the quietness of the site, directions were perfect. The children (aged 8 & 5) had a great time in the woods, on the swing and stroking Digger. Usually they want some entertainment but this site really suited us (grandparents and parents too). The lack of rules and restrictions were great. We enjoyed watching the lorries and diggers although I've read that some didn't like them. The toilets are basic but were exactly as described. If you are 8 you love not having to wash! We found the owner super friendly. All good.

Disliked: I can't think of anything I disliked. As an adult I suppose I'd maybe like a shower..... But it was fine without.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your great review. It really is all about connecting with nature here - and playing with Digger the dog! It’s true that some people find the lorries and diggers a bit of a nuisance, but just as many seem to enjoy the contrast between the peace and quiet of the camping field and the hustle and bustle of the farmyard. The facilities are, indeed, basic. There’s no getting away from that! We’re very happy that you enjoyed your stay with us and look forward to seeing you again soon.

Route directions

Please make sure that you use Gravelpit Hill Lane to access the site. Satnav devices often suggest Ellis’ Hill as the best route. Please don’t come this way. There is a ford which is sometimes quite deep. You need to be on the B3030 (Arborfield to Twyford or vice versa) to reach the site. Drive to the top of Gravelpit Hill Lane, and then turn right. The farm is a few hundred yards along on the left. What3words: blip.reverted.cutback.
