  • Quiet grass pitches on a working farm in the Chiltern Hills
  • A five-minute drive to Whipsnade Zoo; walk out to Dunstable Downs
  • Alpacas and sheep on site; pubs within easy walking distance
Farm sites are fab places to stay for family holidays – and the location of New Green End Farm, in the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty between the villages of Kensworth and Whipsnade, is a particularly excellent one. And why would that be? Well, this Bedfordshire location is just a couple of miles from Whipsnade Zoo, meaning that you can walk there in half an hour or so, or maximise your time among the animals by driving there in five minutes. You can stroll straight out into the Dunstable Downs too, and there are a couple of pubs within walking distance for post-outing meals and drinks. If that's not enough walking yet, spend some time wandering around the farm as well – there are miles of pathway to wander along at this working farm, and lots of animals to spot along the way (including sheep and alpacas). That large open space makes for a mighty peaceful place to stay as well, and the grass pitches have been kept on the simple side to make the most of that rural atmosphere. They’re set well back from the main road and surrounded by woodland and open fields, with access to toilets, showers and a washing-up area, plus recycling facilities to keep the place nice and clean. Barbecues and campfires are permitted for that classic outdoor evening vibe, and dogs are welcome to join you on site here. There are a few village stores and farm shops scattered around the vicinity, but for major supplies your best bet is Dunstable, which is five minutes' drive away and home to a couple of large supermarkets.

Liked: The toilets were clean, staff were welcoming and friendly . Lots of lovely walks and a pub in walking distance

Disliked: Maybe due to a thunderstorm there were airplanes flying over most of the night

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely "liked" words; my brother works hard to keep the site clean and he (and the dog, flip flop) are always really friendly to guests. The flight path into Luton Airport is a little out of our control though!!

Would probably camp there in the future.

From the manager: Hi thanks for staying with us, we are close to the airport but they do change the flight path on a regular basis so that's good, we also hope to get some official signs up next year as we have applied to the council, we do have a new post code just this month for the site on Land Park Lane and this is LU6 2PZ, we will add to Pitchup ready for next season, thanks again, great pictures, see you soon.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Great location, near woods and walks but also close to village pub. Very big field, clean and well organised facilities.

Disliked: It would be useful to have microwaves in the kitchen area and small shelves in the toilets.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Irene, thank you so much for your feedback, that’s a good idea with regards to the microwave and shelving we will definitely look at that, hope to see you again soon.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Loved the open space, the freedom to pitch where we chose, the woods surrounding the area. Friendly owner who welcomed us and gave us ideas of places to eat (plus a discount off food). Brilliant facilities with lovely shot showers.

Disliked: The water for the washing up was consistently cold and made washing up really difficult. Not sure if it was a fault or if this was just how it was, still we adapted and overcame.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Marie, thanks you for the feedback glad you had a good time, we will get round to putting hot water in the wash up station, hope to see you again soon.

Local attractions

Whipsnade Zoo (five minutes' drive) is the big draw around here, of course – this offshoot of the Zoological Society of London is home to more than 10,000 animals from around the world, and it’s also got several play areas and a steam railway. To spend more time in the open air, you may like to stroll through the National Trust’s Dunstable Downs estate (25 minutes’ walk), walk through the Whipsnade Tree Cathedral (20 minutes) or pick any one of the scenic trails running through the chalk landscapes of the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Golfers may like to get out onto the greens at Dunstable Downs Golf Club (three minutes’ drive) or Whipsnade Park Golf Club (10 minutes). A little further afield, there’s go-karting, indoor snow sports and the National Museum of Computing up in Milton Keynes (half an hour), a castle in Berkhamsted and a steam railway in Buzzard (both 20 minutes). For a special day out, it's a half-hour drive to the Harry Potter Studio Tour.
