A little bit of boating or bouldering? Plenty of hiking and biking? Hunting, fishing, horse riding and waterskiing too? If that sounds like the sort of break you’re foraging for, circle Buckhorn RV Park and Resort on your map and pack all your outdoorsy bits and pieces. This Utah site is just five minutes’ drive from Huntington State Park, where there’s a reservoir surrounded by orange desert slopes. Huntington State Park is a destination for all things waterskiing, fishing and picnicking. There are crawdad, bluegill and largemouth bass in the water for you keen fishers and around the shore, waterfowl often visit. Don’t worry about getting a little mucky when you’re going about your day there. When you return, this dog-friendly destination has bathrooms, showers and card-operated laundry facilities to keep you looking tidy. Ways to unwind in the eve include connecting to the wifi or watching cable TV. You don’t need to head off the site for some daytime action either. With batting cages, pickleball courts, table tennis, horseshoe pits, cornhole sets, football and a kids’ playground, there are plenty of places to let off steam. This is a wild-but-comfy sort of place, slotted into the outskirts of Huntington between the Manti-La Sal mountain range and the San Rafael Swell terrain. Sourcing some snacks for an evening by the fire ring is easy, with shops 10 minutes’ walk from the site. Meals are just as simple – Huntington has grills and a takeaway sandwich shop all within walking distance of Buckhorn RV Park and Resort.

Local attractions

If you’re already on roll with all your outdoorsy holiday activities and you’re not planning on stopping anytime soon, Joes Valley Reservoir (half an hour’s drive) will keep the streak going. Based in a valley surrounded by mountains, this place is packed with plenty of opportunities for some action: off-road driving trails, hikes through pine hillsides, mountain biking, bouldering and fishing, waterskiing and canoeing on the lake are some of your options. Cedar Mountain Recreation Area (an hour) is another splendid outdoor space further on. Sandstone mountain is the setting, and that means that hikes are on the cards, as well as scrambling over boulders (which kids might want to treat like a miniature maze they can play hide and seek in). Perhaps you’re a fan of checking out the local history of the places you visit. Head to the O'ville Pioneer Village (10 minutes), a handful of cabins that have been preserved from old times. They were once inhabited by the pioneers who built the town communities.
