It's free, quick and easy!
- Choose your own site at a peaceful back-to-nature campground
- A five-minute drive from Floyd and 20 minutes from Buffalo Mountain
- Fire ring and spring-fed water available; lots of berries to pick
The simple outdoor life at its finest is what’s on offer at Handmaids Gate Camp, in pristine Virginia countryside three miles south of Floyd (and easily accessed from US 221).
It’s a pick-your-own-pitch setup here, so it’s a good idea to get in early and have a wander around the place to choose the one you like the look of – perhaps a remote area or a cosy corner tucked away among the trees? Wherever you settle, you’ll be provided with a portable potty and expected to remove your own waste in the bag provided. Water is available too, from a pump with a spring-fed well – bring your own bottles to fill, or use the ones provided.
In keeping with its natural ethos, no drugs or alcohol are allowed at this site. There are plenty of berries around the place though, and you’re welcome to pick as many as you like for a sweet treat or fruity breakfast (or snacks while you head out hiking). If you need a bit more help to cleanse your system, head up to the infrared sauna – guests are entitled to one session per night.
All is peaceful around here by night – cars must be kept up at the road rather than driven into the camping area, so there should be little noise. Lighting comes from solar lights, fireflies and starry skies overhead, and warmth comes from the communal firepit, which is kept supplied with kindling and logs.
Wifi is available at the top of the site but may not stretch to all pitches; it’s worth noting that there are ticks around here, and insect repellent is a handy thing to have around.

Local attractions
If the sound of wind through your hair and treetops down below sounds like your sort of gig, Buffalo Mountain Ziplines (15 minutes’ drive) has eight different zip wires that will send you flying over the forests.
Keep up the pace with more activities like canoeing, kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding, with rentals available in high season in the Fairy Stone State Park (35 minutes) or roll onto the hiking trails around Rocky Knob Recreation Area (15 minutes).
So, a drink or two to wash down earlier’s activities? In the Appalachian mountains, acquaint yourself with the cocktails in the 5 Mile Mountain Distillery (five minutes) or opt for a glass in the courtyard at the stunning Chateau Morrisette winery (15 minutes). With music venues, a chocolate shop and restaurants in Floyd (five minutes), there are plenty of other ways to unwind.
A little history isn’t so far off either. Dedicated to the pair of racers, Wood Brothers Racing Museum (half an hour) has a load of cars and other artefacts, while Mabry Mill (20 minutes) is the site of an old sawmill and blacksmith store – it’s open in high season, so check ahead.
