  • Well-maintained RV park in Alamo, Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley
  • National Parks, wildlife refuges and birding centres within 25 minutes
  • Fishing lake and indoor pool, bar, club house and entertainments
Ride over to the Rio Grande Valley for grand times and a traditional Texas welcome: Alamo Rec Veh Park is a spacious RV resort in the middle of the town of Alamo, 25 minutes’ drive from the Mexican border. Thanks to the abundance of sunny days down here, locals call the Alamo area ‘the land of two summers’, and there are masses of opportunities for getting out into the long warm days all year round on and off the park. Some visitors stay permanently, making for an excellent spread of facilities and amenities around the park: the washrooms are spacious and clean with hot showers and baths and there’s a good-sized laundry on site to keep everyone looking their best. It’s on the activity side that Alamo Rec Veh Park comes into its true ten-gallon-hatted best, with a welcoming bar and clubhouse with dance floor, pool and billiard tables, an indoor pool and hot tub. A fishing lake is also around the grounds, visited by wood ducks and songbirds, with seats for taking in the fab sunrises and sunsets, and a space for hosting regular catch-and-release fishing and remote control boating competitions. You can also fly RC drones and helicopters and race RC vehicles of the wheeled variety on the floodlit dirt tracks, or exercise your trigger finger on the shooting range. A huge variety of classes, events and entertainments is laid on too, from quilting workshops to aqua exercise. A non-denominational church service is held at 9am every Sunday.

Local attractions

The surrounding town is well supplied with shops, supermarkets and eateries, and you could easily pass a day wandering the stalls and sampling the street food at the enormous Mercadome flea market. The Rio Grande Valley is magnet for hikers and wildlife spotters: it’s 15 minutes' drive to the green forests of the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, and 25 minutes to both the World Birding Centre and the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge, richly diverse environments full of tropical birds, white-tailed deer and ocelots. If marine wildlife's more your thing, the park is an hour from the Dolphin Research and Sea Life Center Marine Touch Tanks where visitors meet the dolphins at sea, feed turtles and handle starfish. This is a big hit with kids, as are the stomach-rearranging attractions at Gravity Adventure Park and the various slides, chutes and surf waves at Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark, both on South Padre Island an hour and 10 minutes away. Closer to your Alamo base, there’s loads to learn at the International Museum of Arts and Science at McAllen (20 minutes) and a menagerie of exotic beasts to meet at the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, 50 minutes away.
