  • Wooded site on the banks of the Conde del Guadalhorce reservoir
  • Well-placed for hikes on the popular Caminito del Rey trail
  • Sandy beach on the lake with swimming pier and boat hire
That lake – gorgeous colours, sí? If those are the kind of vistas you could live with for a little while, plot a course to Parque Ardales, right next to Conde del Guadalhorce reservoir and 15 minutes’ drive from El Chorro. Watery glimpses through the pine trees can be had from many shaded spots on this site, with plenty of places for full-on gazing as well – from the strategically-placed picnic tables, perhaps, or the little sandy beach (from where you can also dive in to the water if the urge takes you). Plenty of activity is on offer too – there are canoes and boats for hire, and you’re close to several fab hiking trails. There’s direct access to the Mirador del Somormujo hiking trail, and the Caminito del Rey trail (one of the most popular in this scenic locale) is easily accessed too. If you fancy delving further into the scenic surroundings, staff on site can offer advice on local canyoning, climbing, horse riding, fishing and paragliding. But don’t feel compelled to spend all your time out and about – stick about on site for a game of padel tennis. It’s likely you’ll not want to stray far from your rural retreat for eats either, so you’ll be chuffed to hear that the mini market is well stocked and there’s a communal barbecue area for guests’ use (although note that you’ll need to check with staff first for safe cooking in this woodsy area).

Local attractions

Hikers are well served around these parts – ramble around the lake or take to the eight-kilometre Caminito del Rey, which uses boardwalks and tunnels to navigate around, along and through the area’s gorges. For an insight into local wildlife, head up to Lobo Park, 45 minutes’ drive away, for a guided tour to see the native wolves up close. Close by, the El Torcal Natural Park is a fab place for a hike through strange-looking rock formations (and keep your eyes open for fossils as you roam too). Around an hour away are the town of Antequera (to see the prehistoric dolmen and the medieval Alcazaba) and the seaside resorts of Marbella and Málaga.
