  • Leafy site at a winery with stunning views over Paštrovska Gora peaks
  • Skadar Lake National Park 15 minutes’ drive and Petrovac half an hour
  • Communal kitchen and chillout area; herbs and fruit to pick on site
Well, if you’re after a spectacular view with your Montenegro camping holiday, you’ll certainly get one at Rudinica BaseGlamp; 15 minutes’ drive from Virpazar and set at 500 metres above sea level, it overlooks dramatic Paštrovska Gora peaks and towards the forested valleys of Skadar Lake National Park. The grass camping pitches are set amid lush and partially shaded meadows at a vineyard run by the same family for several generations. The site is terraced (all the better for those mountain panoramas), and guests can make use of a spacious and well-equipped communal kitchen with a relaxing lounge area and a large shared dining table. Facilities include two showers – one outdoor and one in a cabin, together with a composting toilet. For any lazy siesta moments you care to have, there are hidden corners where you can set up a hammock or just chill on daybeds under the walnut and cherry trees. Montenegro is rightly known for the diversity of its flora and fauna; the area around the site is particularly rich in wild herbs like oregano – you’re welcome to pick them to flavour your cooking; there are fruits to pick in season too.

Local attractions

Behind the camp is one of the highest peaks in the Paštrovačka Gora range, so hikers grab a pair of sturdy boots and get underway; you’ll be rewarded with stunning views over summits right to the Adriatic Sea. There are also easier trails to follow along the Orahovštica River, where you’ll happen upon waterfalls and secluded swimming spots (an hour’s walk). Peaceful Skadar Lake National Park (15 minutes’ drive) is a magnet for birdlife like Dalmatian pelicans, herons and eagles. See them up close on a trip in a traditional flat-bottomed wooden boat. Most adventures in the park start at Virpazar (also 15 minutes), a historic waterside town with a fortress overlooking the lake and shops selling local Vranac wines and grape brandies. For a day down on the Adriatic coastline, take the scenic switchback route to Petrovac (half an hour), a laidback resort where you can explore Kastio Fortress and its gun emplacements, chill on the sand-and-pebble beach backed by forested hills and stride out along the Reževići coastal hiking trail.
