Outdoorsy types will find plenty to keep them busy around the shores of Lake Iseo. Bring bikes or hire them on site to do a circuit of the lake on a 66-kilometre cycle path, or get your hiking boots on to walk up into the foothills of the Alps on the ancient Valerian road that starts 500 metres from the site. Various watersports are available around the lake, with the closest watersports centres in Iseo town (five kilometres away) offering sailing, windsurfing, canoeing and scuba diving among others. Brave souls can take canyoning trips from Sarnico, half an hour away by car, while those of gentler persuasion can stick to dry land on the golf course in Franciacorta, 15 minutes away. Drive north for 10 minutes or so to come to Sulzano, the jumping-off point for trips to Monte Isola. A little further afield (25 minutes) are the Pyramids of Zone, natural 'fairy chimneys' that reach up to 30 metres tall, and Brescia, with cathedral, castle and underground tours of the rivers and Roman sites lurking beneath the city’s streets. The Franciacorta vineyards are about 20 minutes away.
