General

  • Waterfront site in Pilzone, on the shore of Lake Iseo
  • Public transport and lakeside cycle path close by
  • Bike and boat rental in the village; watersports centre 4km away

Lakeside living without the usual luxury price tag? If the answer is an enthusiastic ‘si, grazie mille’, sail on over to cosy little Campeggio Olivella in the village of Pilzone on the eastern shore of Lake Iseo.

Not in possession of your own boat? Then you’ll need to arrive in a more traditional manner – wheeling in by car or bike, or taking the short trot from the local train station (a mere five minutes or so as long as you don’t spend too long gawping at the views; plenty of time for that later).

There’s no huge list of leisure facilities to run through at this place, and with good reason – who needs them with these views? No doubt you’ll be itching to get out and about with haste anyway, hiring boats or bikes just outside the site, swimming from the little stretch of private beach over the road or signing up for watersports available down the road in Iseo town. Or maybe you’d prefer to play a round of golf (again with a backdrop that doesn’t favour the easily distracted putter), mosey around the Franciacorta vineyards or take a boat trip to Monte Isola (Europe’s largest lake island).

It’s but a couple of minutes’ amble to get into the village for restaurants and the local nightclub; further noshes are available at the bars, restaurants, bakeries and grocery store in Sulzano, three kilometres away.

The fairy lights in the olive trees were a pretty touch. The campsite manager lent us an extension lead as ours wasn't long enough and showed us which part of the pitch was the most level on a slightly sloping pitch, which was helpful. Free wifi was a hit.

    Disliked:

Facilities were basic (1 normal toilet/ 2 Turkish toilets). When we booked we thought the campsite had direct access to the lake. The lake is either accessed by jumping over a fence or walking +/-200m to a small public beach.

    Unfortunately nothing.

    Disliked:

Unfortunately everything. The site was akin to a shanty town. Old caravans that had been there for years were dilapidated and one even had plastic stone look cladding on the front. Very cramped, grass very bare making the ground dirty. The public beach on Lake d'Iseo was OK but only a few metres wide. The "private" beach for the site required us to climb over a five foot high metal fence gate, not easy when you're disabled. Noise from neighbours playing music through boom boxes at night was enough. And finally the road into the site was so narrow that the motor home mirrors had to be pulled in making manoeuvres difficult. We left after one night. The man running the site was helpful and apologetic but it's easy to see why it only gets 2 stars from the local tourist board.

We weren't sure when we arrived but the campsite turned out to be quite cosy rather than just crowded due to the small size and proximity of toilets and showers. We appreciated the closeness to its own private beach at the lake, Over a fence which was a bit odd but no problem. We definitely would go there again but we don't need entertainment etc

The people at the reception were very nice, friendly and helpful. The fact that we could have a fire was also a plus. Furthermore, the atmosphere was very relaxed and peaceful. The facilities were clean.

    Disliked:

I would not say I disliked anything regarding this campsite. The only things we would have wished different would be running water in the cabin and warmer showers. all in all the site was fabulous.

From the manager...

Thank's for the positive things you have described about my campsite, I'm very glad you 've appreciated customer service, concerning the showers probably you visited us in that period we upgraded the plant ;
after we jointed solar and electric warm water never missed again

Local attractions

Outdoorsy types will find plenty to keep them busy around the shores of Lake Iseo. Bring bikes or hire them on site to do a circuit of the lake on a 66-kilometre cycle path, or get your hiking boots on to walk up into the foothills of the Alps on the ancient Valerian road that starts 500 metres from the site.

Various watersports are available around the lake, with the closest watersports centres in Iseo town (five kilometres away) offering sailing, windsurfing, canoeing and scuba diving among others. Brave souls can take canyoning trips from Sarnico, half an hour away by car, while those of gentler persuasion can stick to dry land on the golf course in Franciacorta, 15 minutes away.

Drive north for 10 minutes or so to come to Sulzano, the jumping-off point for trips to Monte Isola. A little further afield (25 minutes) are the Pyramids of Zone, natural 'fairy chimneys' that reach up to 30 metres tall, and Brescia, with cathedral, castle and underground tours of the rivers and Roman sites lurking beneath the city’s streets.

The the Franciacorta vineyards are about 20 minutes away.
