Your first stop during your stay should definitely be the area around Vallon-Pont-d’Arc, 35 minutes' drive away, to hire canoes or kayaks to explore the Ardèche river and pass beneath the Pont d’Arc. A must-see nearby is Pont d’Arc cavern, a manmade cave replicating the paintings, drawings and engravings from the UNESCO-protected Chauvet cave. Your journeys below the ground don’t have to end with the caverns at Pont d’Arc – Aven d’Orgnac and Madeleine cave, both within an hour of the site, are full of spectacular rocky landscapes and well worth a visit. Fans of the vino should head to Cave de Lablachère, five minutes from the site, to follow a waymarked trail through the vineyards and the huts that sheltered workers. After that, head to Néovinum, Château de la Selve or the château cellar at Domaine des Lèbres, all within 30 minutes, for tours and tastings. For a castle experience that doesn’t include wine, travel the 45 minutes to Château des Roures for a tour of the 14th-century castle and the silk farm, and to see the medieval siege engine, the trebuchet, in action.
