At Camping Le Rouge Gorge, it’s clear the owners pondered long and hard about what could make a trip to the excellent nearby Puy du Fou theme park (10 minutes’ drive) even better and came up with a genius idea: setting up an undercover heated pool and Jacuzzi at the site for chilled-out dips after riding the rollercoasters.
And the thoughtful additions don’t stop there at this ace base in the Pays de la Loire part of the Vendée department. There’s also a huge play area with a multi-sports field, a zipline, a rope pyramid and a bouncy castle, plus fitness facilities for keeping up with your workouts while away from home.
Despite all these snazzy amenities, Camping Le Rouge Gorge has a calm feel – great for restful days spent snoozing next to the pool while les enfants are entertained with the games, art classes and other hands-on activities at the kids’ club. Nippers also have sports tournaments, themed meals, evening Jenga sessions and clown shows to keep them amused.
Starting to feel energetic as you try to relax at the park? Tire yourself out on walks along one of the surrounding trails leaving straight from the gates to the Sèvre river and admire the tiny islands, restored mills and viaduct enroute. If you fancy fishing, the Pinsonnière lake is a 200-metre wander away, and canoeing trips can be kicked off from a rental spot in Saint-Malô-du-Bois (10 minutes).
You could also amble to the local village, Saint-Laurent-sur-Sèvre (15-minute walk), to grab grub at the supermarket, bakery, fishmonger or butcher. Food’s available at the park’s snack bar as well and there are barbecue areas if you’re planning on doing your own cooking.

Staying at Camping Le Rouge Gorge just to visit Puy du Fou? If so, there’s a lot to look forward too: this theme park is the second most popular in France (the first is Disneyland) for its historical-inspired rides and shows.
There are also ample other activities to chuck on the itinerary in this action-packed area. For days out in the countryside, head over to the swimming spots and watersports areas on the Verdon and Ribou lakes (25 minutes’ drive) or soak up the scenery as you speed through the countryside on the Railroad of the Vendée steam train (10 minutes).
More time amid nature is to be had in the Maulévrier Japanese-themed garden, the biggest of its kind in Europe, during roams among the serene ponds, cherry blossoms and bonsai trees.
