  • Family-friendly campsite in a peaceful part of the Marais Poitevin
  • Half an hour's drive from Niort; La Rochelle 55 minutes
  • Snack bar, on-site shop, laundry facilities and play area
Set deep in the countryside of the Marais Poitevin, Le Marais Sauvage is a family-friendly campsite just south of the small village of Le Mazeau. The surrounding landscape is mostly made up of grassy marshlands, peaceful forests and pretty canals that are great for boating – so much so that the local area is sometimes known as 'La Venise Verte' (Green Venice). Guests spending the night here have access to well-maintained and spacious pitches, all of which are a short walk from the site's handy facilities. As well as essentials like toilets and showers, the site has a snack bar for light refreshments, laundry facilities, a service point for motorhomes, a small on-site shop and a play area for the kids; well-behaved dogs are also welcome. The centre of Le Mazeau is a short stroll away, where there is a restaurant and a bakery where you can pick up fresh bread and tasty pastries in the morning. Slightly further afield, the larger town of Niort (half an hour's drive) has a definite charm with its old buildings and pedestrian shopping streets, while day trips to the coast can be easily arranged as well – it's just under an hour to La Rochelle.

Power optional grass and earth site

Liked: This is our 2nd time at Le Marais Sauvage this summer. It's a site with excellent facilities for showering etc. There is a little shop on site with bar/small cafe for drinks and delicious gallettes etc made fresh to order on site. The couple that run the site are very friendly and welcoming, speak perfect English which is helpful for some. The grass pitches are a good size and the surroundings are beautiful. Just what you need on a "get away from it all" holiday. There are lovely walks/ cycle paths next to the site. This site is a wee gem.

Power optional grass and earth site

Liked: Lovely clean facilities. Large pitches with shade and hedges. Little bar on site selling some hot food (pizzas etc). Very welcoming owner. Gorgeous outside bar 300 m too, again pizzas . Next to the small river, boats for hire. Family friendly, games for the children. Excellent stopover suited us.

Disliked: Nothing, it was perfect for us.

Power optional grass and earth site

Liked: Facilities fair, showers are very small, pitches okay, electric and water not on every pitch and means you have to walk through someone’s pitch to get water every time. Didn’t really suit us but could well be just right for a lot of other people.

Disliked: Let’s just say we won’t be returning.

Would return without hesitation

Power optional grass and earth site

Liked: Unique environment, the land and fields for mikes around is covered by narrow waterways not unlike canals but narrower. Lots of boats and punts. Very peaceful and full of wildlife, good for walking and cycling. The camp was very good and peaceful, hosts were very good and helpful. Nice food and drinks if a little limited.

Disliked: Only improvement I would suggest is a wider choice of meals. The current food is really good just a little limited.

Local attractions

With 112,000 hectares of canals and nature to explore, the surrounding Marais Poitevin regional natural park is a great place for boating, canoeing, kayaking or stand up paddleboarding. Fishing, cycling, walking and other leisure activities to help you feel at one with nature are also readily available in the immediate vicinity – for recommendations, head to the nearest tourist office in the pretty riverside town of Coulon (15 minutes' drive), which is also a good place to start boat trips. Elsewhere, the pretty ruins of the Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Maillezais (15 minutes) is worth a visit for anyone interested in the local area's Catholic and Huguenot heritage. For more inspiring buildings, you’d do well to check out the Renaissance château at Coulonges-sur-l'Autize too (25 minutes). If you don't mind a longer drive, it's well worth driving down to the beaches of La Rochelle or Noirmoutier island, both of which can be reached in just under an hour. If you're travelling with kids and want to keep them on their best behaviour, the prospect of a trip to the fab rides and live action shows at the Puy du Fou theme park (an hour and 15 minutes) is likely to do the trick.
