  • Family-friendly spot by the river Hem, a half-hour drive from Calais
  • Surrounded by the Caps et Marais d’Opale Regional Natural Park
  • Dogs welcome; playground, restaurant, games room and activities
Half an hour's drive from Calais, Camping L’Orée des Caps is a top location for a family holiday in northern France, or for an easy stopover. This quiet, friendly and family-oriented site is in the Caps et Marais d’Opale Regional Natural Park, 25 to 30 minutes' drive from beaches, and has modern amenities and a snack bar. You'll also be well placed for history-rich hikes along the GR145/Via Francigena path, a pilgrims' route that links Canterbury to Rome and passes only a few hundred metres from the site – it's one of multiple hiking trails that you can begin directly from the site – or trips to the heritage attractions of Saint-Omer (half an hour's drive). The level grass pitches at this site are well-maintained and surrounded by tall hedges for privacy. There's plenty of scope to be sociable when you feel like it, though, with a range of organised activities taking place on site from karaoke sessions and sociable dinners to fitness sessions and pétanque tournaments. There’s also a lawn with a volleyball net, a games room with table football, and an outdoor play area with climbing structures and a basketball hoop. Dogs are welcome at this site, and you should find plenty of dog-friendly walks along the banks of the river Hem, which borders the property. The on-site snack bar serves classic French dishes like croques monsieurs and crêpes, as well as pizzas, though the house speciality is an aperitif board that almost groans under the weight of assorted cheeses, cold cuts and gherkins. If you’d rather make your own food, you should be able to buy all you need in the town of Licques (five minutes), which also has a couple of bakeries and restaurants.

What customers say

Great value, friendly owners, quiet spot near Calais. Private pitches, decent WiFi. Sanitary facilities dated but clean, though some soap/loo roll issues noted and hot water temp sometimes iffy – repairs ongoing.

Power optional grass site

Liked Loved how close to Calais it was without being too noisy or busy. 35 min drive to Calais was a breeze!

Loved free WiFi, was actually decent WiFi too.

Loved how friendly the manager was!

For around £10 a night there is absolutely nothing I can grumble or complain about.

Just take your own toilet paper and hand soap.

Disliked Nothing !

From the manager: Hello,

Thank you for your feedback.

We are committed to welcoming our guests in the best possible way. We have chosen to provide high-quality Wi-Fi free of charge throughout the campsite, as we know how important it can be, especially given the cost of some mobile data plans when travelling abroad.

Thank you as well for your recommendations about our future trip to Scotland. We will definitely keep them in mind!

We look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Best regards,

Aurélie and Fred

Liked Nice hot shower

Disliked No soap or toilet paper in the Loos.
Specifically booked this site as advertised there was a bar & snack bar. Neither were open. The weather was really bad but had nowhere to go & nothing to do. Some went on to another site as was so disappointed. I was leaving early the next day or i would have left too.

From the manager: Hello,

We are sorry that your stay did not meet your expectations.

Toilet paper is available from reception during opening hours. As for shower gel or soap, we do not provide these amenities, which is quite uncommon in campsites, especially on a two-star site.

The bar and snack bar are open on Fridays and Saturdays during the mid-season, and from Tuesday to Sunday during the high season, between 6:00 pm and 9:00 pm. There was indeed an error on our Pitchup page regarding this information, and we apologise for that.

The weather was particularly bad during your stay, and we completely understand your frustration. We did our best to adapt to the situation by opening two mobile homes so that campers could stay warm and have access to a kitchen, lounge area and showers. We also welcomed some guests a night earlier than planned (which I believe was the case for you) and offered a goodwill gesture to those who were able to find an earlier ferry crossing.

Unfortunately, there is only so much we can do in such exceptional weather conditions, but we genuinely tried to help everyone as much as possible.

We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back one day, under sunnier skies and enjoying a drink on the snack bar terrace.

Have a wonderful day.

Liked Fred, the owner. Very chatty and welcoming and helpful with advice for places to visit.
The bar was well stocked and with a good atmosphere.
The whole campsite had a friendly air.

Disliked The pitch had lots of holes and bumps in it.
The washing facilities were clean but basic. No soap or toilet paper.

From the manager: Hello,

Thank you for your feedback.

We are continually working to improve our pitches and fill in any holes whenever they appear. We appreciate you bringing this to our attention.

Toilet paper is available from reception during opening hours, and we are always happy to provide some if needed.

As for shower gel or soap, we do not provide these amenities, and this is generally quite uncommon on campsites.

Have a lovely day, and we hope to welcome you back again in the future.

From the manager: Hello,

Thank you very much for your kind review. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us and appreciated the friendly atmosphere of the campsite. It means a lot to us to know that you felt warmly welcomed and had a pleasant stop before your journey home.

Thank you as well for your suggestions regarding the cold water supply. We already have 12 cold water points throughout the campsite and, following your feedback, we have added two more close to the sanitary facilities. As for toilet paper, it is available at reception, and we will be putting up a sign to make this clearer for our guests. We are always looking for ways to improve the comfort of our campers.

We look forward to welcoming you back on your next visit!
