It's free, quick and easy!
- Family campsite five minutes’ walk from Calais Beach on the Opal Coast
- Ferry terminal 10 minutes’ drive; Calais sights 20 minutes’ walk
- Bakery and grocery shop on site; entertainment room and a play area
Whether you’re overnighting before catching the ferry to the UK or holidaying on the sandy Opal Coast, neatly landscaped Camping Le Grand Gravelot is easy to access from autoroutes from the south of France and the ferry terminal (10 minutes’ drive). Opened in 2017, this Pas-de-Calais site has modern facilities with disabled access, and spacious pitches with electric hook-ups for tents, caravans or motorhomes.
There’s plenty here to keep families occupied on long or short stays; play areas and a pétanque court, plus a communal entertainments room with TV and games. The sandy Calais Beach is five minutes’ walk away, and if you need to stretch your legs for longer, the Bassin des Chasses hiking area leads around former docks to the yacht marina.
Handy services include charging points for electric cars, dedicated baby washrooms and a laundry (taking tokens). The site is accessed by an automatic barrier that’s protected 24/7 by security, and there’s a safe at reception for storing any valuables.
While you’re in reception, the welcoming staff there will help with your tourism and travel plans, and let you know of any events or festivals taking place in Calais city or by the beach.
If you’re self-catering, a small bakery provides the all-important morning baguette and a grocery van sells the basics for simple meals. Otherwise, seafront bars and restaurants are 10 minutes’ stroll.

Local attractions
The historic centre of Calais is full of surprises: if you’re short on time, you can see the main sights by climbing up its UNESCO-listed Belfry (half an hour’s walk) for views across the city, and admire Rodin’s famous “Burghers of Calais” sculpture a few steps away. Have a mosey around the produce market on Place d’Armes, which was largely reconstructed after World War II but still dominated by the landmark 13th-century Guet Tower.
Staying for longer? See more works by Rodin in the Museum of Fine Arts in Calais, or take an audio-guide to learn more about the war at the Musée mémoire 39-45. The city’s lace-making past is brought back to life in the contemporary City of Lace and Fashion.
If you’d rather be down on the beach, snooze in the sand or take a ride along the seafront aboard the vast, automated Calais Dragon (15 minutes' walk to the dock). When cut-price shopping is what you’re after, Cité Europe and Channel Outlet (both 10 minutes’ drive) should see you pick up some bargains.
