Coming to the Creuse countryside to get a real rural fix? Aim for Élevage Jolivet, a few minutes’ drive from the teeny village of Domeyrot, to get your fill of both farm life and natural areas. This place is pretty huge – 60 acres, in fact – but the number of guests on site is limited to just a handful so you’ll always be sure of having plenty of space to chill out among the wildlife-filled meadows and ancient woodlands. It’s a pick-your-own-pitch affair here, so take a stroll around and then choose where to set up… out in the open field, tucked away among the trees or down by the riverside – it’s up to you. Hot showers and eco toilets have been set up around the place, but otherwise the site has been left untouched to give guests a proper experience of living with nature. There are loads of hiking trails and geocaching routes to follow around the grounds – keep your eyes peeled for wildlife in the undergrowth, up in the air and scuttling about on the paths as you wander. For guaranteed spottings of bigger beasts, head up to the farmyard where friendly sheep, cows, pigs, hens and goats hang out (and they’re even friendlier if you turn up to lend a hand at feeding time…) And yes, this is a farm, so that means fresh produce to buy on site for tasty alfresco meals. Bakery deliveries can also be sorted, and any other supplies can be sourced 10 minutes’ drive away in Châtelus-Malvaleix or at the supermarkets in Gouzon and Boussac (both 20 minutes away).

Local attractions

Once you’ve tramped along the trails on site, expand your horizons further into the lovely Limousin countryside by seeking out one of the marked hiking trails or mountain bike trails nearby. Need somewhere to cool off? There are plenty of supervised swimming spots around local lakes and rivers, along with areas for fishing, kayaking and sailing. You may have picked a proper open-air experience for your own stay, but if you’d like a glance at a rather fancier way of life, sashay off to one of the area’s châteaux: Villemonteix, Jouillat and Sainte-Feyre are all within a half-hour drive. If you’d like to meet some bigger beasts, a good place to start is at The Wolves of Chabrières, just outside Guéret (half an hour's drive). While you’re over that way, have a go at finding your way out of the giant maze, check out the town’s art and archaeology museum or head to Étang de Courtille’s lake beach for a freshwater swim.
