What a viewsomely verdant and lushly green part of French countryside this is – and what a lot there is to so without even stirring from the site. On the edge of the Loire valley village of Cande-sur-Beuvron between Blois and Amboise, Camping la Grande Tortue is crammed with facilities and activities for all ages and tastes, from the kids' club for ages four to 12 to the games and sporting events for older children and teens during the summer holiday period. If your offspring are of a less organised nature, there are inflatables to scale and bounce upon, an excellent playground with spring rockers and roundabout, a rope climbing frame, and a multisports pitch for volleyball, handball or basketball. Also at their disposal (yes, this site is indeed packed with active options) are two ping-pong tables and a pétanque court as well as a kids' trampoline – and, splendidly, one for grownups too. Bikes and pedal karts available to hire at a small additional cost. The site is set in woodland for those days when you all yearn to just roam around, and is in a land of hiking paths and around 300 kilometres of cycling paths, all among the spectacular châteaux of the Loire valley and less than less than 10 minutes' walk from the Beuvron river. You can book Loire river boat trips, archery sessions and other nearby activities at reception, where there's also reams of tourist info, postcard and stamp sales, and ticket sales to several famed local spots. But back to what's on site... As you'll see from the pics, a smashing waterpark is here too for your splashing sessions: the big outdoor pool (heated with disabled access) comes with three waterslides, water games, a paddling pool, an outdoor hot tub and a sauna, and has a removable roof covering so you can five in whatever the season. Next to the pool – as you'll need refuelling after all that activity – is the terraced restaurant, for dinners, breakfasts, ice cream, cold drinks and takeaway pizza. A shop with regional produce, other groceries and fresh bread is also on site; for more supplies, wander to the local village just 150 metres away.

Local attractions

Hire a bike and get out on your wheels in the site's woodland and Loire valley: the area around the site has 300 kilometres of trails around the region's châteaux and the peaceful and traditional villages. The local village Candé sur Beuvron is on the famed long-distance cycle path La Loire à Vélo, crossing France from east to west. From the site, take the signposted cycle track to Chaumont, Blois and Chambord, in the region between the Loire and Cher rivers where the kings of France came to hunt and where they built their world-famed castles. There are also hiking trails and horse tracks in the area, or you could get out onto the waters of the Loire as a boat passenger or as an adventurer in a hired canoe. If you seek châteaux, motor along to the fab Château de Chenonceaux spanning the waters of the Cher river just over 30 kilometres away: this famed French Renaissance palace is renowned for its traditional – and spectacular – gardens, which you can wander any day of the year. There's a wine cellar to investigate too, as well as a maze to potter around (while make believing you're competing in the Triwizard Tournament or about to battle a minotaur, natch). Another spectacular Loire Vallrey château, and also 30 kilometres away, is Château de Chambord, famed worldwide for its Renaissance style and its round towers. Or have another traditional time with a bumble around the town of Blois, 15 minutes' away, a riverside town with narrow streets lined with half-timbered houses.
