It’s not often that you get to spend the night right by a tourist attraction – but that’s exactly what you’ll be able to do at Camping Grottes d'Azé, at the southern end of Burgundy. This peaceful three-acre site is right next to the Grottes d’Azé, on the edge of the village of Azé. Staying right next to the caves means that you’ll be able to get in as soon as they open in the morning, thus avoiding the crowds and perhaps allowing you to get on your way to another destination later in the day. The site is only about 10 minutes’ drive from the A6 motorway (halfway between Dijon and Lyon) so it’s a handy pick for an overnight stop and a cave tour before getting back on the road. It’s worth sticking around a little longer if you can, though, as there’s plenty to see and do in the local area, including walking trails, cycle routes, vineyard visits, châteaux – and indeed more caves… Time spent on site should be rather lovely too – the campsite is on the banks of the Mouge river and it’s a peaceful place with lots of wildlife around and shade from the trees. The swimming pool (available for an additional charge) is open during high season only. There is also a playground and a pétanque court on site for a little more activity. Amenities are also well supplied, including a launderette and bathrooms with disabled access. Time for some food? Pick up pizzas and the like from the snack bar and order your morning bread delivery for a good breakfast. You can also walk into the village centre in about 10/15 minutes for a shop, bakery or restaurant.

Liked Great to have a pool and the band on Saturday night.

Disliked Would have been good to have been informed that a band was going to be playing there. Showers to have more hooks to hang towels etc

2 bedroom safari tent (five person)

Liked The safari tent was so wonderful. It was the best experience, our teenage kids were beyond excited, which is hard to do these days. It had everything we needed and more.
The beds were so comfortable. I would love to stay here again and the kids wanted to come back here for 2 weeks.
A lovely small site and the man on reception was friendly and welcoming and helped us immediately to locate our plot after some confusion with the signage.

Disliked The pillows were more like cushions but this wasn’t an issue as we bought our own anyway.
The toilet window we believe, may have been installed back to front as when I was washing the dishes, I had a most unfortunate clear view of my husband using the facilities. Again, this was not an issue for us as we found it hilarious, I mention it as perhaps other guests would be less amused who were camping around us.
The hot tub wasn’t working and had some foliage in, but again this wasn’t an issue as we didn’t realise the safari tent had one anyway.
I mention them only to consider for improvements, they really didn’t matter to us.

Liked De ruimte, bergruimte onder de bedden voor je tassen. De locatie, fijne sfeer. Bestellen van stokbrood en croissants tegen een fijne prijs.

Disliked Ik vond 1 kookplaatje weinig, 2 was beter. En er miste een deksel van het koffiezetapparaat, waardoor er overal koffie terecht kwam (lekte!).

Liked Very pretty, shady site with good facilities. We enjoyed a very good meal at the terrace restaurant, one night, and there are some takeaway options available too, e.g. roast chicken, chips. The staff are friendly, especially Alex in the restaurant, and the campsite is set in a lovely location, is next to the caves and on the edge of the village. When we were there, there was a 4-day weekend fete/market on which was great. Local supermarket just 6 minutes away, so was very handy.

Disliked The site was very busy when we were there, at the very end of July and beginning of August, so the main toilets and showers could have done with more attention, as others have mentioned in their reviews. There is one small set of toilet/urinal and washbasin facilities near the terrace, that was smelly, so I avoided those! WiFi available on the terrace only.

Local attractions

Of course you’ll want to visit the Grottes d’Azé to explore the wonderful naturally sculpted underground caverns and see the well-preserved bear and lion fossils it’s become well known for. And if that’s given you a taste for such things, follow up with a trip to Grottes de Blanot (15 minutes’ drive). Back above ground there are plenty of activities to keep you busy, including biking along the green or blue cycle routes, going horse riding from Azé, climbing into the trees at Lugny Acro (five minutes) or rock climbing at Vergisson (25 minutes). And of course here in the midst of the Mâconnais vineyards there are wines to be tasted if that’s more your thing. For a taste of the area’s more recent history, head to Cluny Abbey (15 minutes), once the largest church in Christendom, or take a tour of Château de Brancion (15 minutes), up on a clifftop overlooking the medieval village.
