Omaha beach

  • Family-friendly site under two kilometres from the coast
  • Within five kilometres of Omaha beach and 10 kilometres from Bayeux
  • Playground and shop on site; barbecues permitted
Two top Normandy destinations are a breeze to get to from family-friendly Camping L'Hypo'Camp: the World War II memorial of Omaha beach (five kilometres) and the spectacular sight of the Bayeux Tapestry, within 10. Omaha beach, the one five kilometres away, has a watersports centre with sailing activities. When you return back to base, there are more ways to unwind, as the quiet site has a children's play area with a seesaw and swings. Barbecues are allowed on site too for alfresco dinners, and there's the convenience of having a small grocery shop on site if you need to gather ingredients. There are also other amenities including two well-maintained shower and toilet blocks. L'Hypo'Camp is outside the coastal commune of Colleville-sur-Mer, just under 40 kilometres from Calvados department capital Caen.

Great spot for D-Day sites. Clean facilities, hot water, helpful staff. Pitches vary. Bread service a bonus. Minor Wi-Fi issues, need own toilet paper, but generally a top stay.

Liked Brilliant Campsite. Built in a sort of round horse-shoe shape with trees on the side, this was just what we were looking for. Warm, very friendly owners; a young couple (and Iris the baby ❤️) and I presume their Dad/Father in law, who was constantly working! They all spoke good English. When we arrived we needed a longer electric cable, they supplied it to us straight away even though it was quite late at night. They even helped me with my very limited and clumsy attempts to speak French!

There was a little shop and bar within the reception room selling beer, water, milk etc and you could order fresh bread up until 6pm for the following day. There were two shower and toilet blocks that were spotless and constantly maintained and plenty of large washing sinks and drinking water taps. The showers were lovely but be aware that there were often temperature surges where the water became very hot. There was a path around the back of the site that took you on a beautiful walk along the sea to Omaha beach some 35 - 40 mins walk away.

The site itself was very peaceful and quiet. Mainly older clientele like myself and wife (mid fifties) No loud noises or guests and plenty of birdsong including owls. Also had some chickens there!

The site was based around 8-10 miles outside Bayeaux in beautiful countryside. Normandy was incredible. My wife and I were taken aback at how wonderful it was. Pretty countryside, charming and picturesque villages and stone buildings. There were tree lined paths and quiet roads. There were open flat farms and stunning old churches everywhere. The scenery was like something out of a film.

The whole place is steeped in history and he role of Normandy in WW2 is well known. The American cemetery is a ten min drive away and a must visit. Before coming into the cemetery you go through a museum where old video clips of the war are played and where there are lots of memorabilia displayed. It also gives you a clear description of what the D day landings were all about. All of this is free - there is no charge or admittance fee.

The beaches around Normandy are numerous and this is where I was genuinely
surprised. They were stunning. The sea was blue and turquoise and every beach seemed to stretch for miles. We were fortunate to have good weather whilst we were there and I was genuinely shocked at how gorgeous they were. I expected something along the lines of Weston Super Mare or Burnham on Sea. A sort of muddy, English channel type beach but no way. They were similar to those stunning long beaches you get in Devon and Cornwall. The sea was always near the front and like a duck pond when we were there - calm and ideal swimming conditions.

A tip: don't just visit the places that are recommended, especially when it comes to the coast.. Go off the beaten track and you'll be amazed. We visited Cherbourg and then travelled slowly along the west coast, down to Flaminville and then further before cutting across eastwards to our camp. Stunning and these little seaside villages and beaches are not mentioned in the guide/travel books yet they will take your breath away. Some, if not the best photos I've ever taken. Sunset was just unbelievable on the Monday 29th Sept 2025.
A brilliant holiday. I felt soaked in history, culture and beauty. Almost everything there seems to have charm.

Places visited ;

The basilica of St Therese of Lisieux - Stunning.

Mount St Michel - Breath-taking.

Hornfleur - Charming.

Le Havre and it's bridge and then it's winding and bendy type bridge/road - Scary!

Cherbourg and then down the west coast - see above main description.

American cemetery and Omaha beach - Moving.

Arromanches beach and it's artificial harbour constructed for the D day landings - Fascinating.

Numerous beaches on the north road from our camp to Oustreham Car ferry - Superb.

Disliked My only criticism of the campsite was the Wi-fi access. It was intermittent and poor for the first five days. Funny thing though is that it was like this for five days and yet on the last two days it was perfect!

Caen was the only place I thought was grey and colourless with a big ugly building in the middle of it. Always busy.

There is also a busy road - dual carriageway and I think it's the N13 - it takes you to Lisieux or if you're travelling up to the north to Le Havre and it's a toll road. However, you have to pay online and if you're not aware of it, it could catch you out as the signs are not in English. (There may have been one in English).
You have 72 hours in which to pay so you have to get WiFi and internet access. Google Sanef and it is very simple to pay. It doesn't cost much. There are also tolls on the bridge over Le Havre. These you pay by card on the road itself.

Liked Wonderful find. We had a good size pitch for our large tent. All individually marked out. The staff we very kind, spoke English and gave us some tips for things to see in the area. We had come to visit the WW2 beaches. Beautiful walk along the beach to the American cemetery. Facilities were clean, nice big hot showers. Bar area so we had a beer each night. Extra bonus of being able to order fresh croissant for the morning. Highly recommend

Local attractions

Normandy tourist destinations of Omaha beach and the Bayeux Tapestry see hundreds of thousands of visitors to this region every year. The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial is at the site's local town of Colleville-sur-Mer, overlooking the beach; at Bayeux, take time to see the town as well as its famous tapestry, stopping off at the 11th-century cathedral, the Memorial Museum of the Battle of Normandy, and, if you're here for World War II remembrance, the British war cemetery just outside town. The fishing, horse riding and canoeing within the same distance should provide plenty of entertainment by the coast, as should the local sands within a kilometre, and the fishing boat views from the harbour of Port-en-Bessin, three kilometres from the site. The World War II memorial and museum of La Pointe du Hoc within 20 minutes' drive of the site. Also, remember to take your chance to have a tour of the Isigny Sainte Mère Coopérative (20 minutes' drive) cheese and butter factory.
